Six members of the Colo-NESCO baseball team were given all-Iowa Star Conference recognition in 2018.

Seniors Matthew Hill, Bryce Niemeyer, Mason Lytle, Sean Cutler and Garrett Packer, and junior Kelly Gray were all recognized after helping Colo-NESCO go 8-6 in the conference, a big improvement on its 5-12-1 showing in 2017.

Hill was named to the all-ISC elite team as an infielder. He was joined by Don Bosco’s Bryce Schares, Logan Lutgen, Kendall Becker, Cael Tenold and Trevor Brown; CAL’s Nate Rapp; Janesville’s Bryce Destival; North Tama’s Skyler Staker and Hale Hulme and Riceville’s Grant Shedenhelm.

During ISC play, Hill hit .475 with a .593 slugging average, .700 slugging average, seven doubles, one triple, 11 walks, 18 runs and 15 RBIs. In the field, he made 15 assists and putouts apiece.

Hill was a unanimous pick to the South Division first team, along with Staker, Hulme, Lance Zobel and Tate Payne from North Tama; Rapp, Ben Rapp and Brock Guerrero from CAL and Kolton Gill from GMG. Gray and Baxter’s Derrick Klemme were the other first-team picks in the South Division.

Gray posted a .326 batting average and .491 slugging average with two doubles, 17 steals, 13 walks, 20 runs and six RBIs in conference games. He also made 29 putouts and 14 assists on defense.

Niemeyer, Lytle and Cutler all landed on the South Division second team. They were joined by Baxter’s Travis Lindemoen and Carter Nelsen, CAL’s Cody Turner and Luke Rapp, GMG’s Aaron Fleming and North Tama’s Tyler Morrison.

Niemeyer was 3-2 with a 2.77 earned-run average, 29 strikeouts and 26 walks in 35 ⅓ innings on the mound in conference games. Lytle hit .273 with a .455 slugging average, two doubles, two homers, nine walks, 15 runs and nine RBIs and he also made 12 putouts and two assists in the field.

Cutler recorded a .265 batting average with a double, six runs and 12 RBIs and he registered 20 assists and 11 putouts on defense against ISC foes. He also went 3-3 on the mound with a 2.80 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 30 innings.

Packer was named all-ISC South Division honorable mention.

In 2018 ISC games, Packer had a .545 OBP with 18 walks, one double, seven runs and six RBIs. He also threw out seven base runners and made 87 putouts and 15 assists with only two errors on defense.
