ZEARING - Good pitching wasn’t enough for the Colo-NESCO baseball team in a 4-1 loss to Janesville Friday at Janesville.

Sean Cutler, Bryce Niemeyer and Brighton Clatt combined to hold Janesville to just three hits. But the Royals were also held to three hits and Janesville was much more opportunistic with its scoring chances.

Janesville scored once in the first inning, then took charge in the third with a three-run outburst. Niemeyer and Clatt shut out the Wildcats the rest of the way, but Colo-NESCO didn’t provide any offensive support until putting up a run in the seventh, falling to 7-9 overall and 5-6 in the Iowa Star Conference.

Cutler took the loss after giving up four runs — just two earned — on only one hit with five walks and two strikeouts in two innings. Niemeyer struck out four and surrendered two hits and walks apiece in 3 ⅓ scoreless innings and Clatt didn’t give up a run or a hit and struck out two in 1 ⅔ innings.

At the plate, Niemeyer went 1-for-3 with an RBI; Mason Lytle walked, stole a base and scored; Kelly Gray finished 1-for-2 with two walks and a steal; Matthew Hill singled and Ryan Banks walked and stole a base.

Dawson Charley threw 5 ⅔ scoreless innings, giving up two hits and walks apiece and striking out 10 to get the win for Janesville. Christian Mauer and Blake Destival each drove in two runs for the Wildcats.
