Fred Luing Chitty

Nevada - The world lost one tough, cool cowboy on October 30, 2021 when Fred Luing Chitty of Nevada, IA, passed away at Mercy One Hospital in Des Moines following a stroke.

Fred was born to Juanita and Vernon Chitty on June 12, 1943 in Collins, IA. He graduated from Nevada High school in 1961. Tragically, his older brother Darrell and father Vernon both died in car accidents when Fred was a teenager. He was drafted into the US Army in 1965 and graduated from the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in 1966. He deployed to Vietnam as part of the 709th Maintenance Battalion 9th Infantry from 1966 to 1967. Upon return home, he was married to JuDee Skuttle from 1969 to 1979; they had two girls, Rani and Jennifer. He loved being his own boss at Chitty Earthmoving as a heavy equipment operator. His passion was his land development project outside Nevada, Forest Park.

Fred always had a unique sense of style and loved putting on his hats and boots and going out! He was happiest when he could find someplace with old-style country music but was up for trying almost anything—especially if there was good food and fancy cocktails involved! He usually headed south away from Iowa winters—hill country in Texas, Florida, Arizona, or California. He would always visit his daughter Jennifer and granddaughter Aubry in NC, where he became a favorite amongst their friends. He was a true fan of all things Frank Lloyd Wright and frequented conferences and tours across the country. In September of this year, he planned a road trip across Iowa and Wisconsin with Jennifer and Aubry to share some of his favorite sites, including Taliesin, the Wisconsin Dells, Dubuque, Decorah, and Mason City.

Fred is survived by daughters Rani Silva and Jennifer Chitty; granddaughters Aubry and Serene; and many cousins. He is preceded in death by his mother Juanita, father Vernon, and brother Darrell.

A memorial service will be held at the Nevada Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at 324 S. 6th Street, Nevada, IA, on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at 2:00 pm.
