Yvonne Martin passed from this life to finally meet Jesus on Friday November 22, 2019. Yvonne spent the last six months in home hospice care and her final weeks in the home of her son Cary and daughter in law Sherri who provided tender care. She was lovingly looked after these months by her entire family and extended family. So much love, gratitude, and even laughter were exchanged during this poignant time even celebrating her 90th birthday and hosting a family reunion.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, November 29, at Memorial Lutheran Church (701 11th Street) in Nevada with Pastor Duane Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Family will greet friends beginning at 9 a.m. at the church until service time.

Yvonne Lorraine Wander Martin was born on July 14, 1929 to William Frederick Wander and Blanche Ostlie Wander in their home in Clermont, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. When Yvonne was two they moved to the Wander farm between Clermont and West Union, Iowa. After her father died in 1941 she and her mother moved to West Union where Yvonne graduated from high school. She graduated with a two-year Normal Degree from Upper Iowa College in Fayette, Iowa where she met her future husband. For one year she taught elementary school at Westgate, Iowa.

Yvonne married Walter Martin on August 19, 1951 in St. Olaf Lutheran Church in West Union. To this union five children were born: Greg, Kim, Scott, Cary and Chris. They lived in Oelwein, Iowa before moving to Nevada, Iowa in 1964. Walter and Yvonne divorced in 1977.

With five children Yvonne attended the Ames School of Practical Nursing when classes were held at Mary Greeley (it later merged with DMACC and moved to Boone). She graduated first in her class in 1966 and worked 14 years as an LPN at Story County Hospital in Nevada. In 1980 she was employed as a technician and “fill in nurse” at the National Animal Disease Center. In 1985 she transferred to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory where she worked as a technician until her retirement in 1996.

Yvonne enjoyed retirement and with careful money management as a single person she owned a cozy comfortable home, had a wide circle of friends and traveled the world! She explored parts of Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. She treasured special trips with son Scott and his family to Japan and Mexico. Yvonne also traveled all over the US; she enjoyed fun trips with daughter Kim visiting granddaughter Vanessa in Colorado, California, and Washington, D.C.

Yvonne was a 55-year member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. She enjoyed completing cross stitch artwork and crocheted quilts for every child and grandchild. Honoring her early years on the farm she could coax any near-dead plant back to life, grow any vegetable and plant flower seeds anywhere especially on the walking path near her home. She was a serious card player and loved a good political discussion. Her greatest joy was her big ever-expanding family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one grandson and one great granddaughter. Surviving is a son Gregory (Carol) of Marion, Iowa, daughter Kim Burnett (Lynn) of Ames, Iowa, son Scott (Tatis Sempere) of Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, son Cary (Sherri) of Nevada, Iowa and son Christian of Ames, Iowa. She is also survived by grandchildren Elizabeth, Andrew, John, Vanessa, Benjamin, Leigh, Celena, Derek, Axel and Jordy Arnold Sempere, Sayer, Tyler, Chris and Adam Cox, Chandler and Hana and 20 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sister in law Pat Mayhew (Jim) of Indianola, three nieces Renee Konrad (Dean) of Cedar Rapids, Vicky Edwards (Dave) of Chariton, Toni Irving (Steve) of Chariton, many cousins and faithful friends.
