Ray was born in Story County, Iowa, on October 15, 1934, to Gladys and Arthur Couser. One of three children, Ray had a brother Robert Couser, and sister Mary Jean Heintz.


Ray met the love of his life when he first saw Marlene Hall. They were married in 1957, made a wonderful life for themselves, and had four children; Thomas, Susan, Robert, and Jennifer.


Ray served in the United States Air Force Reserves, and later owned and operated a Conoco service station. Ray made the career move to join the Nevada, Iowa, Police Department in 1965, where he served with distinction as Police Chief until his retirement 27 years later.


When Ray retired in 1992, he and Marlene moved to Salem, Oregon, to be nearer their children and grandchildren. Ray and Marlene had many adventures in the Pacific Northwest.


Ray was 84 years old when he passed away at home in the early hours of September 22, 2019. He was surrounded by family and loved ones.


Ray is survived by his wife Marlene, their son Thomas, and daughters Susan and Jennifer; son Robert having preceded his father.


Specially remembered family members include eight grandchildren; Robert Couser, Haley Gomez, Brooke and Bridget Rogers, Marlee Hayes, Allison Bradbeer, and Katie and Wesley Snyder, and a single Great Grand Daughter, Cali Couser.


Other close family members include Tonya Valentine, Scott Snyder, Dan Reznicsek, Brenda Couser, and Brady Rogers.
