David Eugene Warner, 70, of Owatonna, died Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Story County Medical Center in Nevada, IA.

He was born April 22, 1947 in Iowa Falls, Iowa the son of Victor and Ruth (Olsen) Warner. David graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1965. He served in the US Army from 1965 to 1968 achieving the rank E5, Sargeant. While in the military he received several medals including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Drill Sergeant School Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Following his military service he returned to Iowa where he worked at equipment dealers in Ames, Nevada and Johnston, Iowa. In 1996 David moved to Bemidji where he worked for Carol Daly as a ranch hand and was later given the nickname “Wrangler” before retiring in 2007.

David was a life member of the VFW and he cherished the friendships he made with fellow members. He had a fond love of the outdoors and nature and enjoyed traveling to Alaska in 1978, 1982 and 1985 to go salmon fishing. David enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing and wood working. He also enjoyed his 1970’s vintage Volkswagons.

He is survived by daughters, Ginger McKee of Savoy, IL, Sara (and Tim) Shill of Nevada, IA, Stephanie (and Jim) Memmer of Nevada, IA; grandchildren, Preston Shill, Cameron Shill, Logan McKee, Morgan McKee, Chase Dobson, Leighton Memmer, Colin Memmer; brother, Bob Warner of Iowa Falls, IA. He is also survived by special friends, Pete (and Renee) Belina, Mitch (and Rochelle) Belina, Mike Hamilton, Doug (and Jeanne) Pichner, Mike (and Carol Daly) Richtsmeier.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Warner, Bill Warner and his great friend, David Belina.

Visitation and funeral services were held at Michaelson Funeral Home on Monday with military honors provided by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Interment will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada. Memorials are preferred to the Owatonna VFW Post 3723 or to the donor’s choice.
