Winter is coming and our community needs your help! On Nov. 2, the Story County Coalition for Energy Efficiency (SCCEE) is sponsoring the Winter Weatherization Challenge to mobilize volunteers to weatherize the homes of elderly, disabled and low-income individuals throughout Story County. Volunteers will install plastic on windows, door sweeps, weather stripping around doors and windows, and more. The goal of this initiative is to lower heating costs and make homes more energy-efficient this winter.

More than 100 volunteers are needed to make this day a success. Community groups are encouraged to form a team of four to six members to weatherize homes. This is a great opportunity for businesses, organizations, service clubs, faith groups, student groups and friends and family. Go to to register your team or call 515-268-5323. Each team should designate a team captain, who will be responsible for relaying information to the rest of the team and attending a short training session prior to the event. Please register by Oct. 19.

There will be two shifts on Nov. 2: 8:30 a.m. until noon, and noon until 3:30 p.m. Teams will meet at the Collegiate United Methodist Annex building when their shift starts to collect supplies and instructions. All volunteers will receive a free homemade chili lunch.

SCCEE is a collaboration of representatives from Central Iowa RSVP, Mid-Iowa Community Action, Inc. (MICA) and the Volunteer Center of Story County.
