A Maxwell 17-year-old died following a rollover crash that occurred the morning of Saturday, Feb. 13, around 1:20 a.m.

According to Capt. Barry Thomas of the Story County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the crash on 645th Avenue, just north of 322nd St.

In a written report from the Sheriff’s Office, "Upon arrival, the driver, Chase Mohler of Maxwell, was deceased at the scene. The passenger, William Spencer, 16, of Maxwell, was transported to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines with unknown injuries. Spencer was the reporting party for the crash."

Sheriff’s deputies said it appears the vehicle, a Dodge Dakota, was traveling southbound on 645th Avenue and upon coming over a hill, the driver lost control. The loss of control was likely due to snow/ice conditions and/or high speed, they say. The vehicle left the road to the east and rolled, coming to rest on its wheels.

The Iowa State Patrol was called to the scene for a technical investigation, Thomas said.

Visitation and funeral services for Mohler are planned for this Wednesday evening at the Maxwell Area Community Center. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., with the funeral service beginning at 7 p.m.

Mohler was a junior at Collins-Maxwell High School. According to his obituary, he was an avid outdoorsman.

Mohler is survived by his parents, Jason (Meggen) Lawrence of Maxwell; his sister, Faith Lawrence of Boone; his brothers: Parker and Owen Lawrence of Maxwell; and his maternal grandparents: Deborah Hobson of Utah, Doug Fuller of Maxwell and Martin Mohler of Des Moines.
