Nevada Golden K Kiwanis

The Nevada Golden Kiwanis met Tuesday, July 23, at the First United Methodist Church. Paul Hunter was the greeter and prepared the room. Johann Thiel made the coffee and Marlene Anderson provided the excellent treats. We were treated to prelude piano music by Bev Packard. Bev and Mary Pevestorf assisted us in singing “God Bless America.” President Bob Collins opened the meeting and led us in the pledge. Barb Cockshoot gave the invocation and she also won the 50/50, but donated the winnings to the United Way.

Our speaker, Jean Kresse, spoke to us about United Way of Story County. Its mission is to lead the county in building partnerships to identify needs and develop human services in health, education and financial stability. These services are available to children, youth, adults and families. United Way of Story County has partnered with many schools in the county to provide educational (mostly reading) and food services, especially in the summer. In short, the United Way is an organization that provides a vast amount of aid to people and families in need. Please support this worthwhile organization.

The business meeting consisted of asking members to turn in service hours and completing the August calendar for speakers and volunteers for our various jobs. Members were told about a grant that was written to obtain additional funds for scholarships for young people with disabilities and special needs at One Heart Equestrian Therapy. Our meeting closed as usual with a humorous story.
