The Colo-NESCO board of education heard from Athletic Director Travis Owens regarding discussions between the district and other area districts’ joint soccer program. All districts involved – Baxter, Collins-Maxwell, Colo-NESCO, West Marshall (other districts are also showing interest) — are currently discussing where the team will practice and play games, the team’s name, fees, costs and conference affiliation. Discussions are still ongoing, and Owens will report back to the board during the August meeting.

In other news, the board plans to officially accept an exchange student from Iowa Resource for International Service (IRIS) during next month’s meeting. The board also approved a health benefit for support staff in the premium amount of $483.40 per single employee.

During a discussion on legislative issues, the board recommends the following issues to the Iowa Association of School Boards: Allowing school bond issues to be passed by a simple majority vote, continuing voluntary preschool education for four-year olds and increasing funding from 0.5 to 1.0 in services and transportation to ensure all children have access to the preschool. The board also encourages more services for mental health and offering employees voluntary enrollment in the state’s insurance policies.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Colo Media Center.
