Nevada Golden K Kiwanis
Nevada Golden Kiwanis met Tuesday, July 9, at the Memorial Lutheran Church. Paul Hunter was the greeter and Jerry Upchurch provided the refreshments. President Bob Collins opened the meeting and led us in the pledge. Barb Cockshoot gave the invocation. Bev Packard(piano) and Mary Pevestorf led us in singing. Bev also provide a prelude of piano music. There were 19 members attending, along with one guest.
Peggy Bruns was introduced by Bob and spoke to us and demonstrated chair yoga for seniors. As sitting and inactivity is the new smoking for seniors, it is a factor for poor health or worse. Chair yoga is used in hospitals, senior centers and all kinds of health care services. Yoga is done with consideration to breathing, posture and movement. It can be helpful for multiple types of health problems such as MS, carpal tunnel and hypertension. You can also include meditation with the yoga exercise. Our members were given the opportunity to follow along with Peggy in a few exercises.
We celebrated the birthday of Gwen Ward. Barb Cockshoot won the 50/50 and Johann Thiel provided the end-of-meeting humor.
The Nevada Lions Club held its annual picnic at Hattery Park July 10. After we enjoyed a very plentiful and good potluck dinner, President Paul Malsom presented our 2019 scholarship recipients. They briefly told us what their plans are for college and what they hope to make their occupation. We were very pleased with the selections the committee had made and we wished both of them best of luck.
Past President Susan presented a couple of awards for the 2019 Lions’ year. She presented Bob Hunter with the Lion of the Year award and though he was not present, named Jim George the volunteer of the year. After a few minutes of visiting, the meeting was adjourned. Next regular meeting will be held at Windsor Manor at 6:30 p.m. Please come join us.
