Last Thursday was Family Literacy and Math Night at Colo-NESCO Elementary in Zearing.

The featured guest was Alicia Smith, a local children’s book author, who worked with all students during the day and was then available to autograph and sell copies of her book in the evening.

Other fun activities included reading and math games that parents could play with their children, an information session for parents regarding how they can help their student in reading and a book give-away. Iowa Public Television also provided a session on how its programming can help children improve their literacy skills.

In addition, the local public libraries, Raising Readers and other information tables were available to distribute materials to families, who were also able to enjoy supper in the lunch room at this event.
