No one was injured in a shooting at an apartment complex in Huxley early Wednesday morning.
Police received the call about 2 a.m. of s shooting at the apartments on National Drive, behind the Casey’s General Store, just off of U.S. Highway 69.
Huxley Police Chief Gerry Stoll said two men knocked on a door at 106 National Drive and ask for someone.
“One of the men brandished a gun and they started to try to gain entry,” Stoll said.
Stoll said the victim, an adult female who answered the door, shut the door quickly and locked it and then crouched down. Shots were fired into the door before the suspects fled on foot. Stoll said the shots lodged into a wall and couch in the apartment.
No one was hurt, and Stoll called that a miracle.
“I’m so glad that she shut the door quick and crouched down … she probably saved herself and her mom and dad (who are the other two residents of that apartment).”
Stoll said when the victim answered the door, the suspects said they were looking for someone, but that person didn’t live at that apartment.
“We have no idea why they would shoot through the door,” Stoll said.
The shooting remains under investigation.
“We have some speculations about the reasons (why those two people were in Huxley), and none of it seems related to the people who lived there (at the apartment),” he said.
Huxley police officer Jacque Gloede responded to the call and received backup from the Story County Sheriff’s Office until Stoll arrived at the scene.
“This is not a common thing in Huxley … This stuff doesn’t happen in Huxley,” Stoll said. “The world’s changing.”
Stoll believes this was a random occurrence., but he still urged caution of Huxley residents.
“In the 27 years I’ve been here, I don’t recall a shooting here, ever,” he said. ” The citizens of Huxley are still safe. We’re hoping to have it solved soon.”
He doesn’t believe the suspects live in Huxley.
“We’ve got some suspects we’re getting leads on and trying to figure out the reasons why,” Stoll said. “We will go from there.”
