Royals split two at Waterloo

GILMAN – The Colo-Nesco baseball team was unable to finish off East Marshall July 9 in Gilman as the game slipped away from the Royals in the seventh inning, with the Mustangs handing them a 4-3 setback.

Colo-Nesco started off strong. The Royals took a 2-0 lead after one inning and maintained a 2-1 advantage through three frames.

East Marshall tied the score in the fourth inning, but Colo-Nesco came back with a run in the fifth to regain control. The Royals took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but that’s when things unraveled a little at just the wrong time as the Mustangs scored twice to win the game and drop Colo-Nesco to 11-17 on the season.

J.T. Adams was the losing pitcher despite a solid showing on the mound. He threw all 6 1/3 innings for the Royals and gave up three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks.

Adams also led Colo-Nesco at the plate as he was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk, steal and two runs. Taylor Hill finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run; Brandyn Niemeyer doubled and drove in a run; Adam Lytle singled in a run and stole a base; Brady Stoeffler singled, walked and swiped a base and Tyler Guy knocked in one run.

Nick Long earned the win in relief for East Marshall after giving up no runs on one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in two innings. Nate DeBondt and Caleb Benzing both delivered a single, run and RBI; Josh Wilson had a pinch-hit RBI single and Austin Briney walked two times and also scored twice for the Mustangs.

WATERLOO – Colo-Nesco split two games at a tournament in Waterloo July 6 at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo as the Royals edged South Hardin in a slugfest and suffered a lopsided loss at the hands of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.

Colo-Nesco knocked off South Hardin by a 10-9 score.

The Royals scored four times in the first inning, three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth to build a 9-4 lead over the Tigers. The game’s momentum shifted in a big way in the sixth as South Hardin put five unanswered runs on the board to knot the score.

But in the seventh Colo-Nesco came back with one run, and the Royals blanked the Tigers in their half of the inning to pull off an exciting win.

J.T. Adams hit a triple, Taylor Hill doubled once and Adam Lytle, Brandyn Niemeyer, Tyler Guy, Payton Larson and Brady Stoeffler each had a single for Colo-Nesco in the win. Adams drove in three runs and scored twice, Hill scored two times and knocked in one run, Lytle and Niemeyer each scored once and Stoeffler crossed the plate twice.

Niemeyer was the winning pitcher in relief as he didn’t allow a run or hit and tallied four strikeouts and two walks over the final 1 1/3 innings. Adams gave up four runs – just one earned – on four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in five innings and Stoeffler threw the other 2/3 of an inning, recording one strikeout.

Blaire Donaldson went 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBI, Blake Drury was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs and RBI apiece and David Shindelar singled and scored three times for South Hardin. Ty Cook took the loss for the Tigers after allowing one earned run on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

The Royals didn’t have much luck versus Garner-Hayfield/Ventura as they allowed four runs in three different innings and only produced four total hits in a 13-1 loss in five innings.

Hill was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, Lytle and Larson both singled once, Guy drew one walk and pinch runner Christian Montgomery scored the lone Colo-Nesco run. Adams was the losing pitcher after giving up five runs – three earned – on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in two innings.

Josh Theobald claimed the win for Garner-Hayfield/Ventura as he gave up one earned run with eight strikeouts and one walk in five innings. Heath Hutcheson went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI, Cade Baker tripled in a run and Theobald went 3-for-4 offensively for the Cardinals.

ZEARING – Colo-Nesco was unable to get anything going offensively down the stretch against BCLUW July 5 in Zearing as the Royals were handed a 3-2 loss by the Comets.

All of the scoring for both teams was done during the first three innings. Colo-Nesco scored one run apiece in the first and third frames and BCLUW did all of its scoring in the third inning.

The Royals put up seven hits compared to four for the Comets, but Colo-Nesco couldn’t string enough base raps together to put runs on the board over the final four innings.

J.T. Adams was 2-for-4 with a double and Taylor Hill, Brandyn Niemeyer, Adam Lytle, Brady Stoeffler and Brandon Jacobs each singled once for the Royals. Hill also walked twice and scored both Royal runs, Niemeyer drove in one run and Stoeffler, Grant Tiarks and Payton Larson each walked once.

Niemeyer was the losing pitcher as he gave up three earned runs on three hits with nine strikeouts and four walks in five innings. Adams threw two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and three walks and striking out three.

Conner Ubben picked up the win for BCLUW as he allowed two unearned runs and struck out six with five walks in seven innings. Mitch Miller and Isaac Novak both singled and scored and Tyler Lutes drove in two runs for the Comets.
