Nevada ends season with 11-1 setback

MONROE – The Nevada softball team saw its season come to a close July 9 as the Cubs fell to Prairie City-Monroe in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals, 11-1, in six innings at Monroe.

Nevada was competitive for most of the game. The Cubs fell behind 3-0 after two innings, but were still within 4-1 going into the sixth.

In the sixth PCM put together a big rally to break the game open. The Mustangs put seven runs on the board in the inning to end the game on account of the 10-run rule.

Alex Van Dam went all six innings on the mound for Nevada and she allowed 10 earned runs on 11 hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Delaney Cheek hit a double and drove in pinch-runner Tiffany Latshaw for Nevada’s only run. Victoria Johnston singled once in her final game for Nevada and Kelsey Haley added a single for the Cubs, who finished 3-18.

Abigail Gilson went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and three RBI and Makenna Van Veen homered and finished 3-for-3 with three runs and a steal to pace PCM at the plate. Payge Edwards was the winning pitcher for PCM as she went the distance and allowed one earned run with five strikeouts and no walks.
