Cubs suffer first loss, 48-12

BONDURANT – Turnovers and the inability to stop the run resulted in a lopsided 48-12 defeat for the Nevada football team at the hands of Bondurant-Farrar Friday in Bondurant.

Nevada (1-1) actually moved the ball effectively, racking up 378 total yards behind a monster game from tailback Chase Dobson. But Bondurant-Farrar (1-1) finished with 484 yards after nearly producing two 200-yard rushers, and the Bluejays were able to take advantage of three Cub turnovers.

"When you lose the turnover battle and give up 430 yards rushing, you are not going to win," Nevada head coach John Pelzer said. "This was a team loss from the head coach on down."

The Cubs actually took a 6-0 lead into the second quarter as Dobson ran through the Bluejay defense for an 85-yard touchdown with six minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter. But things fell apart for Nevada over the next two quarters as the team sputtered on offense and struggled to slow down the explosive Bondurant-Farrar tandem of tailback Grant Petersen and quarterback Drake Fuller.

Fuller tied the score at 6-6 in the opening minute of the second quarter when he broke loose on a 43-yard touchdown run. Five minutes later, Petersen outran the Nevada defense on a 61-yard scoring jaunt and Dillon Stafford added the extra point for a 13-6 Bluejay lead.

Fuller added a short touchdown run just before the end of the half to give Bondurant-Farrar a 20-6 lead at the break.

It was more of the same in the third quarter. Petersen found the end zone on a run from 21 yards out midway through the third, and in the final minute of the quarter, Fuller added a long 75-yard scoring tote to give Bondurant-Farrar a commanding 34-6 lead.

Petersen finished his big day with a 35-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to put the final nail in Nevada’s coffin.

Dobson did give the Cubs a bright spot later in the fourth when he produced his second long touchdown run of the game, this time from 77 yards out.

Dobson ended up with a monster game in defeat as he ran for a game-high 253 yards on just 15 carries. Cub quarterback Brandon Burke ran for 42 yards and he was 4 of 10 passing for 33 yards with an interception.

Dayne Sly tacked on 32 yards rushing and T.J. Fey caught two passes for 21 yards for Nevada.

Petersen topped the 200-yard mark rushing with 221 yards on 26 attempts. Fuller finished with 174 yards on the ground despite only carrying the ball 13 times and he completed 5 of 9 passes for 46 yards with an interception.

Kyle Coogler led Nevada in tackles with 10. Huhn added nine stops, Stephenson made eight, Dobson tallied five and Aaron McCarville delivered four tackles plus a sack.

Burke came through with an interception to account for Nevada’s only forced turnover in the game.

The Cubs will need to put the loss behind them quickly as the most important stretch of the schedule begins this Friday with the start of Class 2A District 7 competition. Nevada’s opening game will be an emotionally-charged rivalry game to boot, as the Cubs will face Gilbert.

The Tigers (1-1) will have revenge on their minds after Nevada thumped them, 52-13, last year in Nevada. Friday’s game will take place in Gilbert and it is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
