COLO – The Colo-Nesco boys’ basketball team was hurt by a poor second half in a 64-46 non-conference loss to West Marshall Saturday in Colo.

The Royals hung right in with the favored Trojans in the first half, trailing just 30-25 at the break. But West Marshall seized control in the third quarter to take a 15-point lead into the final period and Colo-Nesco had no answers over the final eight minutes, falling to 3-3 on the season.

West Marshall shot 47 percent from the field and made 5 of 11 3-pointers and 9 of 14 free throws. Colo-Nesco connected on 43 percent of its shots, but the Royals only made 3 of 13 3-pointers and 5 of 8 free throws.

Rebounding also hurt Colo-Nesco as West Marshall held 32-24 advantage on the board.

Freshman Garret Tiarks led Colo-Nesco with 13 points and he also had four rebounds, one assist and one steal. His older brother Grant totaled six points and rebounds apiece.

Tanner Clatt added nine points and seven rebounds and Brady Stoeffler finished with eight points, four rebounds and four assists.

Reggie Gradwell led a balanced West Marshall attack with 16 points. Duncan Ferch added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals; Matt Van Metre had 11 points, six rebounds and a block; Trenton Keislar chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds and Nick Juel finished with six points, two steals and one assist for the Trojans.

COLO – Colo-Nesco couldn’t shake off a rough start to the second half against GMG Friday as the Royals suffered their first Iowa Star Conference setback with a 55-49 loss at the hands of the Wolverines.

Colo-Nesco trailed by a single point at the half. But the Royals gave up 18 points in the third quarter to fall behind by a 40-31 score and they couldn’t make up much ground in the fourth despite an 18-point outburst in falling to 3-1 in the ISC.

The Royals shot just 2 of 19 from 3-point range and 7 of 14 from the line in the game. They were also outrebounded by a 28-23 margin.

Christian Reischauer had 15 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and one steal for Colo-Nesco in a losing effort. Tanner Clatt tacked on 12 points and two steals and Cole Ozbun added 10 points and a pair of steals.

Luke Petty had 18 points and five steals and Chad Plaehn tacked on 15 points for GMG.

GILBERTVILLE – Colo-Nesco used good defense and ball movement to earn a 52-39 Iowa Star Conference road win over Don Bosco Dec. 10 at Gilbertville.

The Royals held the Dons to 30 percent shooting from the field, an abysmal 3 of 19 showing from 3-point range and just eight free throw attempts. Colo-Nesco also held a 37-31 rebounding advantage in picking up its third conference victory.

Colo-Nesco used a strong second quarter to take a 24-18 lead at the half. The Royals upped their lead to 10 points after three quarters and pulled away for the win.

On offense the Royals had 15 assists on 19 field goals and four different players scored eight points or more.

Brady Stoeffler was the lone Royal to score in double figures. The sophomore guard hit 6 of 10 field goals, went 3 of 3 from 3-point range and 2 of 3 from the line in netting 17 points.

Stoeffler also had two assists, rebounds and steals apiece.

Tanner Clatt had nine points and three rebounds and Christian Reischauer and Cole Ozbun put up eight points apiece for Colo-Nesco. Reischauer also produced 11 rebounds and six assists and Ozbun finished with five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Grant Tiarks added six points, nine rebounds and four steals and Garret Tiarks chimed in with four points and two assists for the Royals.

The Royal defense did a good job making Don Bosco one-dimensional. Travis Havel shot the ball 28 times and accounted for over half of the Dons’ scoring with 22 points.

Dalton Becker added five points, 14 rebounds and two steals for Don Bosco.
