MCCALLSBURG – The Colo-Nesco softball team lacked spunk on offense in a home doubleheader with Don Bosco Monday as the Royals only totaled two hits, suffering two lopsided losses.

Colo-Nesco had one hit in each game. The Royals fell by scores of 10-0 and 12-1, with both contests going five innings.

In the 10-0 loss Colo-Nesco gave up three runs in the first inning, two in the second and five in the fifth. Erica Babinat singled for the only Royal hit and Hannah Buseman, Kassie Robinson and Melanie Van Loon each walked once.

Buseman and Madison Farren each tallied one steal for Colo-Nesco. Babinat was the losing pitcher as she allowed six earned runs on eight hits with five walks and two strikeouts going the full five innings.

In the 12-1 loss, the Royals were hurt by a seven-run fourth inning. Babinat was again the losing pitcher after allowing 12 runs – just five earned – on nine hits with three walks and strikeouts apiece in five innings.

Sarver collected the only Royal hit of that game and she also walked and scored her team’s only run. Madison Farren drove Sarver in and Shayla Dean picked up a steal.

The two losses put Colo-Nesco at 3-13 on the season and 2-5 in the Iowa Star Conference.

WILLIAMS – Colo-Nesco fell just short in an extra-inning slugfest with Northeast Hamilton June 12 in Williams as the Royals suffered a 10-9 setback in eight innings.

Colo-Nesco trailed 4-1 after three innings, but evened the score in the fourth. The Royals went up 6-4 in the top of the sixth, but the Trojans came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

In the seventh inning Colo-Nesco scored three times to take a 9-7 lead. But Northeast Hamilton once again responded, putting up two runs in the bottom of the inning to even the score and force an extra frame. Colo-Nesco was unable to score in its half of the eighth and Northeast Hamilton put the winning run across the plate in the bottom of the inning.

The Royals pounded out 15 hits in the loss. Melanie Van Loon was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs; Hannah Buseman finished 3-for-5 with a double, two runs, a steal and an RBI; Kylie Sarver was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI and Madison Farren finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

Erica Babinat was the losing pitcher after giving up seven earned runs on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts in six innings. Sam Riese allowed three runs on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts in two innings.

Molly Greenfield gave up three earned runs with five strikeouts and no walks to earn the win for Northeast Hamilton. Jaidyn Timm went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs for the Trojans.

GILBERT – Colo-Nesco wasn’t able to overcome an anemic offensive showing in a 3-0 loss to Gilbert June 11 in Gilbert.

Royal pitchers Erica Babinat and Sam Riese combined to hold Gilbert to three hits, but they issued six walks. Colo-Nesco only tallied three hits as well, and the Royal batters only picked up one walk as a team.

Gilbert scored one run in the first, third and sixth innings. Kate Shannon was the winning pitcher for the Tigers after striking out five in seven innings and Cali Koeneke was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Tigers.

Babinat allowed two runs – one earned – on three hits with four walks and no strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Riese walked two and struck out one, giving up one earned run in 2 2/3 innings of hitless ball for Colo-Nesco.

Riese, Kylie Sarver and Madison Farren each had a single and Peyton Hall walked once for the Royals.

TRAER – A tough first five innings on defense doomed Colo-Nesco in a 10-3 Iowa Star Conference loss to North Tama June 10 in Traer.

The Royals allowed the Redhawks to score in each of the first five innings and Colo-Nesco surrendered at least two runs in four of those innings. The Royals put up one run in the second and their final two scores came in the top of the fifth.

Erica Babinat was the losing pitcher for Colo-Nesco after giving up five earned runs on six hits with eight walks and two strikeouts in six innings. Emma Knoop picked up the win for North Tama as she allowed three runs on six hits with five walks and four strikeouts.

Babinat was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run and Madison Farren went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Royals, McKenna Farren finished 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI, Peyton Hall singled and walked twice, Sam Riese walked and scored and Kassie Robinson and Kylie Sarver each picked up one walk.

Sarah Howard went a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI for North Tama.
