Cubs win battle of ranked foes, 1-0

NEVADA – The Nevada boys’ soccer team celebrated senior night with a big 1-0 victory over non-conference foe Pella in a duel between two ranked teams May 14 at the SCORE Athletic Complex in Nevada.

The Cubs, rated fifth in Class 1A by the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association, took down the ninth-rated team in 2A to close out the regular season with a 10-4 record.

The game was a defensive battle. The Cubs got off nine shots and keeper Zach Anderson was forced to make seven saves to secure the shutout victory.

Daniel Buenrrostro scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Austin See. Buenrrostro and Joey Badger each had three shots for Nevada and Christian Gross, Tate Handsaker and Tanner Hanson finished with one apiece.

Pella keeper Ben Robertson made four saves in a losing effort as the Little Dutch dropped to 10-5-2 on the season.
