MONROE – The Nevada boys’ soccer team scored its second victory of the season Monday with a 4-0 road win over Prairie City-Monroe.
The Cubs, ranked fourth in Class 1A entering the game, scored four minutes into the game and kept the pressure on the rest of the night. Nevada led 2-0 at the break and added two more unanswered goals in the second half to improve to 2-1.
Brook Thompson netted Nevada’s first goal on a corner kick by Tanner Hansen. Tate Handsaker connected for the other first-half score, as well as the first Cub goal of the second half off assists by Austin See and Johordan Ritter. Brandon Burke capped the scoring off a feed from Daniel Buenrrostro.
The Nevada defense was awesome all game, holding PCM to just two shots on goal to earn the shutout.
RUNNELLS – One mistake doomed Nevada in a 1-0 loss to Class 3A school Southeast Polk Friday.
The Cubs held Southeast Polk to three shots on goal in the first half and had the edge in possession time most of the half. But they were unable to capitalize as the game was a scoreless tie at the break.
"I thought we played really well in the first half," Nevada head coach Bill George said. "We moved the ball around and created some good scoring opportunities; we just couldn’t finish them."
In the second half Nevada continued to play well, but during the 68th-minute, Southeast Polk took advantage of a Cub breakdown to score the game’s only goal.
"We were a little out of sync in the second half," George said. "We started to play the long ball instead of controlling the game with short passes."
Nevada finished with eight shots on goal in the loss. Tate Handsaker had three, Daniel Buenrrostro tallied two and T.J. Fey, Tanner Hanson and Johordan Ritter finished with one apiece.
Cub keeper Zach Anderson made 12 saves on the night. The loss put Nevada at 1-1.
