The Nevada JV boys basketball team recently picked up four wins to improve their overall record to 11-1. On Jan. 24, they defeated North Polk 65-52. In a very intense battle, the Cubs came out hot, knocking down five three-pointers and scoring 24 points in the first quarter to build a 10-point lead. They then held off the Comets the rest of the way, earning a 13-point victory. The Cubs balanced attack was led by Duncan Westphal’s 15 points, Erik Fevold’s 13 points, Joe Heintz’s 10 points, Bennett Thompson’s 10 points, Zach Hansens’s nine points and Chris Dobernecker’s six points and six rebounds.

On Jan. 28, the team traveled to Saydel and came away with a 49-34 victory. They shut down the Eagles, who were never able to get much going against the Cub’s intense half court defense. Westphal led the way again with 15 points, while Noah Stowe added eight points. The Cub’s three post players, Dobernecker, Jake Kapustka, and Stephen Dolley, had a good game, combining for 10 points and 19 rebounds.

Nevada then took on West Marshal and South Hamilton on Feb. 1 and came away with two victories. Nevada outscored West Marshal 16-2 in the second quarter which propelled them to a 45-41 win. The Cubs had nine different players score in the game and were led by Westphal’s 11 points.

Nevada wrapped up their two team invite with a 39-31 win over South Hamilton. Nevada’s lock down defense was again the key to the win. The Cubs were led by Heintz’s 11 points and eight rebounds. Stowe also had a good game as his 10 points included two big fourth quarter threes.
