Pictured are members of the Mid-Iowa Diamonds softball team, which was newly established this year and based out of the Nevada SCORE Park. The team included girls from four area school districts: Nevada, Roland-Story, Ames and Colo-Nesco. Team members were (front row, from left) Peyton Messerli, Cheyenne Hilton, Erika Helton, Maddi Highland, Ellie Burlage; (back row) Caitlin Barker, Jessica Eslick, Sydney Mathis, Mackenna Ruffcorn, Bre Hilton and Madison Friest. The team was coached by Mark Mathis, who was assisted by Denny Harrison and Jeff Burlage. Members of the team put in an average of 4.5 hours of weekly practice time from mid-August to mid-October. They played a total of eight games at the high school level and also played four games in a college showcase tournament in Central Iowa. Taylor Schumacher of Nevada, a member of the Ames High School softball team, assisted with a number of practices, as the intent for this team was to help players learn to play the game at a more competitive level, while focusing on individual skill improvement.
