Nevada goes 4-1 during week

ADEL – The Nevada baseball team had an exciting Saturday as the Cubs traveled to Adel and pulled off two one-run victories at the Adel-Desoto-Minburn Invitational.

The Cubs edged ADM by a 5-4 score and Des Moines Christian in a 9-8 squeaker. The two wins gave Nevada four in a row as the Cubs improved to 10-7 on the season.

In the ADM victory, Nevada rallied with three runs in the seventh inning to claim victory. ADM took a 3-2 lead into the seventh, when the Tigers added another run.

Colynn Black worked around eight walks to pick up the victory. He allowed four earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in seven innings.

Alex Good went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and run and Owen Shawgo was 2-for-3 with a steal, run and RBI for Nevada on offense. Patrick Stephenson was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI, Tanner Hanson hit a pinch-hit single and scored and John Jamison finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Jake Sloss was the losing pitcher in relief for ADM as he allowed four earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings. Grant Goeden gave up one run with one strikeout and one walk in three innings for the Tigers.

Logan Essy was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Joe Sloss walked twice and scored two times for the Tigers on offense.

Nevada outslugged Des Moines Christian thanks to a hot start on offense. Nevada put up three runs in the first inning and four in the second to build a 7-4 lead and they hung on, withstanding two Des Moines Christian runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win.

Brook Thompson threw all seven innings against Des Moines Christian and he allowed six earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and no walks to pick up the win. The Cubs had six hits and drew five walks backing him up on offense.

Good was 2-for-3 with a walk, home run, two runs and four RBI and Zach Anderson doubled twice and drove in three runs as the top Nevada hitters against Des Moines Christian. Black singled, walked twice, swiped two bases and scored three times; Shawgo singled, walked, stole a pair of bases and scored once; Chase Stout walked once and scored twice and Hanson stole a base and scored.

Dillon Bruxvoort gave up seven runs – three earned – on three hits with four walks and one strikeout in two innings to take the loss for Des Moines Christian. T.J. Sheely threw the other four innings and gave up two runs on three hits for the Lions.

Bruxvoort was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI and Connor Schmitt finished 2-for-3 with a double, run and two RBI for the Lions at the plate.

PRAIRIE CITY – Nevada had a big night at the plate in a 10-3 victory over Prairie City-Monroe June 20 in Prairie City.

The Cubs pounded out 18 hits in the victory. The win followed up a 3-2 loss to the Mustangs in a game that was a continuation of a suspended game from earlier in the season.

In the 10-3 victory Colynn Black was on fire for Nevada as he went an impressive 5-for-5 with a double, triple, two runs and a pair of RBI. Zach Anderson carried a big stick as well as he also recorded two runs and RBI apiece and finished 3-for-5 with a double.

Chase Stout, Owen Shawgo, Tanner Hanson and Patrick Stephenson were all 2-for-4 with a run. Stout also walked once, Shawgo stole two bases and Hanson doubled and stole a base.

Chad Jamison was 1-for-2 with a walk, run and two RBI; John Jamison finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and Alex Good drew one walk.

Stout picked up the win as he struck out eight and walked just one batter in six innings. He gave up seven hits and two earned runs.

Brook Thompson threw the seventh inning and struck out two batters without allowing a hit.

Austin Brown was the losing pitcher for PCM as he allowed three earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Clay Cooper was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Chase Keuning, Alex DeWitte and Ron Marshall each singled and scored for the Mustangs.

In the continuation game Nevada fell just short, losing a 3-2 affair. The Cubs fell behind 2-1, tied the game with a run in the sixth and then gave up the winning run in the seventh.

Stout took the loss. Completing his original start before the suspension of the game, Stout threw all seven innings and gave up three runs – two earned – on eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Good doubled in a run, John Jamison was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Black and Thompson both singled and scored, Traye Pelzer doubled and Stephenson went 1-for-3.

Brown was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs after allowing going the distance and striking out three with no walks. Ethan Kain doubled in a run and Clay Cooper went 2-for-4 with a run for PCM.

The split put Nevada’s Heart of Iowa Conference record at 6-3.

COLFAX – A late comeback gave Nevada a 5-3 road victory over Colfax-Mingo June 19 in Colfax.

The Cubs trailed 3-1 after giving up three runs in the bottom of the third inning. But in the top of the sixth they regrouped offensively to score two times to even things up.

In the seventh inning the momentum continued to go Nevada’s way as the Cubs plated two more runs. Pitcher Alex Good then capped off a strong complete-game showing by shutting out the Tigerhawks in the seventh to wrap up the victory.

Good tossed a one-hitter, allowing two earned runs with nine strikeouts and five walks. Owen Shawgo provided the biggest spark at the plate for Nevada as he finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Chase Stout went 2-for-4 with a run, steal and RBI and Colynn Black singled, walked, stole a base and scored twice for Nevada. Zach Anderson singled and scored and Good, Traye Pelzer and Patrick Stephenson each singled once.

John Jamison scored a run and Brook Thompson walked twice for the Cubs.

Jake Alexander threw all seven innings, striking out six batters and walking four in a losing effort for Colfax-Mingo. Chad McLain tripled in two runs and scored the other Tigerhawk run.
