Big fifth inning keys 13-2 win at Kiwanis Invite
ROLAND – The bats broke out in a big way for Nevada against Colo-Nesco at the Kiwanis Invitational June 13 in Roland as the Cubs pounded out 20 hits to earn their first victory of the season with a 13-2 win in five innings.
The top of the fifth inning was the deciding point of the game. Colo-Nesco had taken a 2-1 lead through one inning, but Nevada battled back to go up 4-2 in the fourth, and in the fifth the floodgates opened to the tune of nine Cub runs.
Colo-Nesco was unable to put up a run in the bottom of the fifth and the game ended due to the 10-run rule.
"Consistent defense and attacking the ball in the batter’s box led to this win," Nevada head coach Tonya Van Dam said. "Victoria Johnston kept the (Colo-Nesco) hitters at bay and picked up the pitching victory."
Johnston gave up the two first inning runs – both unearned – and then settled down to hold Colo-Nesco to six total hits. She struck out five batters and walked four.
Offensively Nevada saw four players pick up three hits and four more record two-base knocks in by far the best outing of the year for the Cubs.
Johnston, Delaney Cheek, Haley Ellingson and Megan Anderson were all 3-for-4. Johnston doubled, scored and drove in a run; Cheek doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs; Ellingson doubled, scored and drove two runs and Anderson chipped in two runs and RBI apiece.
Tanner Messerli, Kelsey Haley, Erin Francis and Brooke Van Allen each collected two hits.
Francis and Van Allen both connected for a pair of doubles and they also drove in two runs apiece. Francis also scored twice and Van Allen crossed the plate once.
Messerli was 2-for-5 with three runs and two walks and Haley finished 2-for-5 with a walk, run and RBI.
Erica Babinat took the loss for Colo-Nesco after allowing 12 runs – eight earned – with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings. Sam Riese gave up one run on three hits in one inning for the Royals.
Riese, Hannah Buseman, Madison Farren and Kassie Robinson each singled once for the lone Colo-Nesco hits. Robinson drove in both Royal runs and courtesy runners Michelle Babinat and Grace Stalzer each scored once.
Nevada was unable to keep the momentum going against Boone later that night as the Cubs suffered an 8-0 loss to the Toreadors. The Cubs only trailed 2-0 after four innings, but Boone scored three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth frames to pull away.
Alex Van Dam was the losing pitcher as she gave up eight runs – five earned – on 11 hits with one strikeout and one walk. Nevada totaled six hits during the game – all singles.
Haley, Francis, Johnston, Cheek, Anderson and Ellingson each went 1-for-3.
Kennedy Vinchattle was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Breanna Hunter went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to pace Boone offensively. Dianna Slight was 2-for-4 with two steals, two runs and an RBI and Liz Sternberg finished 2-for-4 with a run.
Hunter was the winning pitcher as she struck out three in seven innings.
The loss to Boone put Nevada at 1-7 on the season.
Colo-Nesco fell to Gilbert in its second outing of the invite by a 7-1 score in a shortened five-inning game due to time constraints.
The Royals trailed 4-0 after two innings and couldn’t regroup in time before the game ended.
Buseman was 2-for-2, McKenna Farren singled and scored, Peyton Hall and Caitlyn Riese each had a single and Sam Riese walked and drove in a run.
Sam was the losing pitcher after walking four and giving up one run in 1/3 of an inning. Erica Babinat allowed six runs on five hits with five walks and one strikeout in 4 2/3 innings.
Clare Isenhart gave up one earned run with four strikeouts and one walk to earn the win for Gilbert. Serine Isenhart and Cali Koeneke both doubled and drove in three runs for the Tigers.
Colo-Nesco concluded the tournament with a 3-11 overall record.
