Nevada finishes third in Class A
HUXLEY – Four first and second-place performances apiece helped the Nevada boys’ track team overcome a lack of depth to place third in Class A at the Ballard Classic boys’ track meet April 16 in Huxley.
The Cubs didn’t score in six of the 18 events at the meet. But their impressive haul in gold and silver medals enabled them to score 93 points, trailing only the 115 by North Polk and 105 by Gilbert in the seven-team Class A field.
Throwing events provided a huge boost for Nevada. Jordan Sanders won the discus and Lance Barber took second in both the discus and shot put for the Cubs.
Sanders’ winning throw in the discus was 146 feet even and Barber came in with a toss of 131. In the shot, Barber peaked with a throw of 41-1.75 to edge the 40-9.5 by Gilbert’s Mike Austin for second and trail only the 49-9.25 by Adel-Desoto-Minburn’s Jesse Bennett.
Erik Fevold and Gabe Dubberke also gave Nevada field-event points in the long jump. Fevold was third with a jump of 18-2.25 and Dubberke peaked at 17-6.75 to place fifth.
On the track Chase Dobson and Colynn Black both won individual gold medals, and Nevada also cruised to a first-place finish in the 4 X 100-meter relay.
Dobson won the 100 as he clocked in at 11.23 seconds to edge the :11.39 by Gilbert’s Andre Rathje for first. In the 400, Black managed to just hold off North Polk’s Nathaniel Long by running a :52.20 to Long’s :52.76.
Peyton Sharp, Fevold, Alex Avalos and Dobson formed Nevada’s winning 4 X 100 squad. The Cub quartet clocked in at :45.58 to easily beat Ballard’s :47.01 for the gold.
Nevada took second in both the 4 X 200 and distance medley events.
In the 4 X 200, Sharp, Brandon Becker, Traye Pelzer and Dobson teamed up to run a 1:38.62. That time trailed only North Polk’s 1:36.71, and it was nearly two seconds better than the third-place time of 1:40.23 run by Carlisle.
Dobson, Avalos, Sharp and Black combined to run a 3:44.27 in the medley for Nevada. Creston won in 3:41.02 and the Cubs just edge’s Gilbert’s 3:44.44 for the silver.
Nevada added fourth-place finishes in the shuttle hurdle and 4 X 400 relays and the Cubs took sixth in the 4 X 800. Dubberke also came in fourth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of :16.56.
CMB won the Class B team championship with 122.5 points. Earlham was second out of seven teams in Class B with a score of 91.
