NORWALK – The Nevada boys’ and girls’ track teams each produced one individual victory at the Norwalk Coed Invitational April 8.

The Cub boys added a silver medal and nine other top-six performances. They finished seventh out of nine teams with 60 points.

Jordan Sanders gave the Nevada boys their gold medal in the discus with a throw of 136 feet, nine niches. Sanders’ throw was one foot, six inches farther than the runner-up throw by Norwalk’s Trey Mateer.

Nevada took second in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of one minute, 3.97 seconds. Colynn Black tacked on a fourth-place finish in the 800 as he clocked in at 2:04.74.

The Cubs also took fourth in the 4 X 100 relay with a time of :47.08 and they were fifth in the 4 X 200 after registering a time of 1:41.40. Peyton Sharp placed fifth individually in the 100 after crossing the finish line in :11.84.

The 4 X 800 relay took sixth for Nevada. Black finished sixth in both the 400 and 200 with respective times of :55.01 and :24.68, Erik Fevold was sixth in the long jump with a jump of 18-10 and Traye Pelzer wound up sixth in the 400 low hurdles after completing the race in 1:03.13.

Newton won the boys’ team championship with 117 points. The Cardinals edged South Tama’s 115.5 points for the title and Norwalk was third with a score of 93.

Alyssa Boyd came through with the top performance for the Nevada girls. Boyd won the high jump after clearing the bar at 4-10 to edge Dallas Center-Grimes’ Olivia Weaver and Norwalk’s Tori VanVelzen, who both topped out at 4-10 as well.

Emily Dittmer placed fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 12:11.81 and the Cub girls also took fifth in the shuttle hurdle, distance medley and 4 X 100 relays. Alli Fey, Tiffany Latshaw, Mary Storvick and Boyd combined to run a 1:18.78 in the shuttle hurdle; Lindsey Haley, Megan Neal, Dittmer and Caitlin Dewell completed the medley in 5:02.73 and Kelsey Haley, Fey, Erin Sellberg and Mara Rhodes ran the 4 X 100 in :54.18.

Kelsey Haley, Sellberg Fey and Rhodes turned in a sixth-place time of 2:05.92 in the sprint medley.

Team scoring for the girls’ competition was not available at press time.
