SAYDEL – The Nevada boys’ track team had a strong showing at the Saydel Invitational Saturday as the Cubs won three events and placed second in three more.

The Nevada totaled 16 top-six finishes on the day, taking second out of nine scored teams. The Cubs scored 93.5 points to come in just behind North Polk’s winning score of 101.

Jordan Sanders and Lance Barber excelled in throwing events and Nevada also brought home two gold and silver medals apiece on the track.

Sanders and Barber came in first and second respectively in the discus. Sanders easily won with a throw of 139 feet, 10 inches and Barber’s runner-up toss was 122-3.

In the shot put, Barber took third and Sanders came in fifth. Barber’s throw was 38-6 and Sanders peaked with a 36-6.5 effort.

Alex Avalos, Chase Dobson, Peyton Sharp and Colynn Black teamed up to give Nevada a gold medal in the distance medley relay. The Cub quartet ran a time of three minutes, 48.05 seconds to edge Des Moines Christian’s time of 3:48.75 for first.

Black also took first individually in the open 400. He crossed the finish line in :52.43 to just hold off the :52.51 by North Polk’s Nathaniel Long for the gold.

Erik Fevold joined Avalos, Dobson and Sharp in producing a second-place time of :45.45 in the 4 X 100. The Cub team finished just one-hundredth of a second off of Bondurant-Farrar’s winning time.

In the 4 X 800 Riley Huhn, Joel Olson, Erik Tanner and Lucas Markey ran a 9:27.38 to place second to North Polk.

Nevada took third in both the 4 X 200 and 4 X 400 relays. Brandon Russom, Traye Pelzer, Gabe Dubberke and Brandon Becker clocked in at 1:40.84 in the 4 X 200 and Sharp, Fevold, Avalos and Black ran a 3:36.94 in the 4 X 400.

Dobson was third individually in the 200 and fourth in the 100 for Nevada. He ran a :23.55 in the 200 and an :11.70 in the 100.

Sharp ran a :54.34 in the 400 to place fourth. Markey and Dubberke each placed sixth in an individual event as Markey crossed the finish line of the 1,600 in 5:04.44 and Dubberke completed the 110 high hurdles in :17.47.

Nevada also took fourth in the shuttle hurdle relay as Russom, Trinity Barker, Pelzer and Dubberke teamed to run a 1:06.54.

The Nevada girls came in sixth out of eight scored teams with 60 points. The Cubs finished 10 points behind North Polk for fifth; Des Moines Christian, Saydel and South Tama took up the top three spots in the team standings with respective scores of 106, 98 and 97.

The sprint medley relay was the highlight event for the Cub girls. The team of Kelsey Haley, Erin Sellberg, Mara Rhodes and Alli Fey ran a 2:00.60 to just edge North Polk’s 2:00.69 for first place.

The Cub girls added a silver medal in the 4 X 800. Amaris Hornbuckle, Maddie Henry, Delaney Cheek and Shannon Gilligan joined forces to run a 12:09.09.

Nevada also took third in both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 200 events and fourth in the distance medley.

In the 4 X 200 Haley, Megan Neal, Kelli Neal and Kayla Little ran a 2:01.04. Haley, Fey, Sellberg and Rhodes teamed back up in the 4 X 100, producing a time of :54.39 to just edge South Tama’s :54.92 for the bronze.

Sellberg, Rhodes, Fey and Emily Dittmer gave Nevada its fourth-place time of 4:51.47 in the distance medley.

Individually, Dittmer took third in the 3,000 with a time of 12:04.08. Sophia Wilson and Kayla Little were third and sixth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 4-6 and 4-4 respectively, and Caroline Goecke came in fourth in the long jump with a jump of 13-11.

Fey was fourth in the 100 hurdles after finishing the race in :17.61, Kelli Neal took fifth in the 100 after crossing the finish line in :14.57 and Abigail Bremmer ended up fifth in the open 400 with a time of 1:10.07.

Hornbuckle was sixth in the 800 after completing the race in 2:52.10. The Cub 4 X 400 team of Goecke, Bremer, Hornbuckle and Erin Johnson ran a 4:49.82 to also take sixth.
