Black places seventh individually at TCI
POLK CITY – The Nevada boys’ golf team didn’t do quite as well as it had hoped at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet Monday, but the Cubs still had a solid showing on the Tournament Club of Iowa course.
Nevada placed fifth out of 10 teams with an 18-hole score of 336. That was good enough to edge Colfax-Mingo by one stroke for fifth, but five strokes behind Roland-Story’s fourth-place score, with South Hamilton, Prairie City-Monroe and Gilbert occupying the top three spots.
"We knew going in it was going to be a two-team race for the conference title between PCM and South Hamilton, but based on our previous scores, I think we had a shot to make a run at third or even second," Nevada head coach Ryan Brown said. "We just didn’t play well across the board today. Five days ago we went to TCI and beat South Hamilton and Roland-Story, and we were outplayed today. Hopefully, this was a little wake-up call."
South Hamilton’s winning score was 311, PCM scored a 320 and Gilbert carded a 323.
Nevada produced three top-20 individual performances.
Colynn Black took seventh with solid six-over par 77. He was consistent throughout the day, shooting a 39 on the front nine and a 38 on the back.
Zach Hansen came in 17th with a score of 85. Hansen had a 43 on the front and 42 on the back.
Dan Ralston ended up 19th overall for Nevada. Ralston carded an 86 with a 41 on the front and 45 on the back.
Cole Gidel was the final scored Cub golfer. He shot an 88 with rounds of 43 and 45.
Braydon Otto shot an 89 to finish just outside the scoring cut and Brady Shill had a 92 for Nevada.
"Colynn played great down the stretch, but outside of his performance, I think we all left a little disappointed," Brown said. "We need to be more focused and purposeful with every shot."
South Hamilton’s Trevor Ullestad was the conference individual champion after shooting a one-under par 70 with nine-hole rounds of 33 and 37. South Hamilton also produced the medalist runner-up as Braxton Risetter carded a 73 with nine-hole efforts of 36 and 37.
Gilbert’s Garret Jensen placed third with a 74.
