NEVADA – Poor shooting from outside proved costly for the Nevada boys’ basketball team in a 57-48 loss to Saydel Dec. 17 at the Nevada High School Field House.

The Cubs only made 2 of 16 3-pointers and they shot just 30 percent from the field overall, falling to 1-4 on the season as well as in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Nevada was especially sluggish on both ends of the court in the first half. The Cubs fell behind by eight points after one quarter, and by halftime, they were down by a 33-19 score.

That hole proved to be too big to dig out of as Nevada had trouble slowing down Saydel’s balanced attack. The Eagles shot 46 percent from the field and they were a strong 15 of 21 from the foul line as a team.

Alex Merfeld was the only Nevada player to score in double figures. Merfeld just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds and he also tallied one block.

Merfeld’s efforts on the boards helped Nevada post a 37-29 rebounding advantage.

Cole Gidel and Riley Huhn netted eight points apiece and Patrick Stephenson chipped in seven for the Cubs. Gidel hit one 3-pointer and finished with two assists and one steal, Huhn contributed eight rebounds and two assists and Stephenson drilled the other Cub 3-pointer and tacked on two steals.

Zach Hansen finished with five points, one assist and one steal and T.J. Fey, Jake Barker, Bennett Thompson and A.J. Strottman each scored two points for Nevada.

For Saydel, Alex Gustafson and Clayton Sommers both scored 11 points, Hunter White added 10 and Kyle Walter chipped in nine.

Gustafson also recorded five rebounds, three assists and one block. Sommers tallied three rebounds and two steals, White pulled down two rebounds and Walter dished out three assists and came away with one steal.
