Royals top Okoboji

HUXLEY – The Colo-Nesco softball team finished 1-2 at the Ballard Festival tournament Friday and Saturday in Huxley.

The Royals fell to Class 4A power Ballard on Friday and then defeated Okoboji and lost to BCLUW on Saturday.

In the loss to Ballard, Colo-Nesco gave up nine runs in the second inning and never recovered in a 14-1 setback in three innings. Colo-Nesco scored its only run in the third inning when Shayla Dean singled in Kylie Sarver after Sarver reached on a double.

Dean also had a steal. Sam Riese singled and McKenna Farren walked as the only other Royals to reach base.

Erica Babinat was the losing pitcher as she gave up 10 runs – four earned – on eight hits with one walk and strikeout apiece in two innings. Riese allowed four runs – three earned – and also had one strikeout and walk apiece in one inning of work.

Brooke Mallon went 2-for-2 with a home run, walk, three runs and three RBI apiece, and Katie Ahrenholtz was 3-for-3 with two RBI to pace Ballard offensively. Kenzie Ihle was the winning pitcher after giving up one hit and walk apiece with five strikeouts in two innings of scoreless ball.

On Saturday Colo-Nesco earned its first victory of the season with a 9-3 triumph over Okoboji.

The Royals jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to see Okoboji close within one run after five innings. But in the sixth Colo-Nesco plated five unanswered runs to pull away.

Babinat picked up the victory as she threw all six innings and allowed one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Riese and Peyton Hall each went 2-for-4 with two RBI to pace the Royals on offense.

Babinat, Dean, Farren, Madison Farren and Melanie Van Loon each added one single for Colo-Nesco. Babinat tacked on a walk; Dean walked, scored twice and drove in a run; Madison knocked in two runs; McKenna scored once and Van Loon had a walk, run and two RBI.

Hannah Buseman walked three times and also scored three runs and stole a base, and courtesy runner Michelle Babinat scored twice for the Royals in the win.

Colo-Nesco suffered a 9-0 setback at the hands of BCLUW in five innings on Saturday. The Royals gave up four runs in the second inning, two in the third and three more in the fifth.

Riese took the loss after giving up four earned runs in one inning. Erica allowed four earned runs with five walks and four strikeouts in four innings of work against the Comets.

Erica, Buseman and Hall each went 2-for-3 to account for Colo-Nesco’s six hits in the loss. Erica finished with a double and a single and Buseman and Hall each had two singles.

Olivia Calloway drove in three runs, Jessica deNeui went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Sara Sharp finished with two walks, three steals and two runs for BCLUW. Nicolette Simpson was the winning pitcher for the Comets after striking out 10 batters and walking only two in five innings of work.

Colo-Nesco concluded the tournament with a 1-4 overall record.

MCCALLSBURG – Colo-Nesco started slow offensively in an 8-2 loss to Clarksville May 24 at McCallsburg.

The Royals didn’t score until the sixth inning and by then they were facing a 6-0 deficit. Clarksville plated two runs in the second, one in the third and three more in the fifth.

Both Colo-Nesco runs came in the bottom of the sixth. But Clarksville answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh and the Royals were unable to respond, starting off 0-2 in the Iowa Star Conference.

Peyton Hall singled in both Royal runs. McKenna Farren walked and scored and courtesy runner Michelle Babinat scored the other Colo-Nesco run.

Sam Riese and Kylie Sarver doubled in three at-bats; Erica Babinat singled once. Erica also drew a walk and Melanie Van Loon picked up a free pass as well for the Royals.

Erica was the losing pitcher as she allowed eight runs – five earned – on 10 hits with three walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

Kimberly Wedeking was the winning pitcher for Clarksville. She struck out 16 batters and allowed three hits and three walks in seven innings.

Megan Backer hit a solo home run, Hannah Faust tripled and scored two runs, Emily Mennenga, Madison Bloker and Isabella Vance each drove in two runs and Wedeking was 2-for-4 with two runs and a steal for the Indians.
