Cub senior tied for 19th place

AMES – A hectic week came to a close for Nevada senior Colynn Black at the Class 3A boys’ state meet golf meet Friday and Saturday at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

Coming off last weekend, where he sandwiched a district golf meet between two days at state track, Black had a solid showing at the 3A state meet. He tied for 19th overall with a 164 over 36 holes.

"This week I didn’t have to worry about I was eating or doing," Black said. "But this spring is probably one of the most memorable experiences of my high school career. It was just fun running a PR in track at state, and coming to state golf added icing on the cake."

Black was off his game a tad on Saturday after turning in a 79 Friday. Black’s Friday score put him just three strokes out of the lead.

"Yesterday was a pretty good day; I was confident all day and was striking the ball well," Black said. "Coach (Ryan) Brown told me today was positioning day and tomorrow you make the move. But today was kind of one of those days. My first round was alright, but I just couldn’t score the second nine."

Black can now take solace in the fact that he only has to compete in one sport. The multitalented athlete ran at state track last weekend and is also part of the Nevada baseball team that just started its season this week.

Creston’s Carson Whittington was the 3A individual state champion at the Ames Golf and Country Club, after shooting a 155 with rounds of 80 and 75 Friday and Saturday. Last year’s individual champion – Centerville’s Alex Moorman – finished in a three-way tie for second with Clear Lake’s Dan Waldron and Decorah’s Michael Peter, as they each shot a 156.

Whittington’s performance helped Creston win the 3A team title with a score of 647. Defending champion Decorah took second with a 650 and Clear Lake placed third with a 653.

Final team scores (36 holes): 1. Creston 323-324-647, 2. Decorah 329-321-650, 3. Clear Lake 320-333-653, 4. Centerville 336-322-658, 5. Williamsburg 328-332-660, 6. Grinnell 331-332-663, 7. Central Clinton 336-335-671, 8. Atlantic 339-336-675, 9. Ballard 348-329-677.
