C-N’s Francis finishes 13th in 1A girls’ discus
DES MOINES – An active three days left Colynn Black with plenty to smile about as the Nevada senior ran two strong times at the state coed track meet, held last Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Black competed in the Class 3A boys’ 400-meter dash on Thursday and the 800 on Saturday in Des Moines. On Friday he traveled over to Pella to compete in the 3A boys’ substate golf meet.
At the end of the three days Black had run a strong 400 time, qualified for state in golf and set a personal record in the 800.
"My goal at the beginning of the season was state golf and state track," Black said. "I got one of them last week, then yesterday (at golf) I ended up getting there. It’s unbelievable. My cousins have texted me ‘just soak it all in, it’ll go fast.’ I’ve definitely soaked a lot of it in."
At state track, Black finished 11th in the 800 and 15th in the 400.
In the 400 on Thursday, Black matched his season-best time of 51.41 seconds to finish third in the opening heat. He ran the first section of the 3A boys’ 800 on Saturday and placed third with a career-best time of 1:58.37.
"It’s a fast track and it’s so fun, with the atmosphere and the crowd pushing you along," Black said. "In the 800 I had a 1:59 in the medley, but my open 800 best was 2:01. I came into this meet fresh, and on the best track there is to run on, I popped my best time ever. It’s definitely an experience I’ll remember for a long, long time."
The Nevada boys also turned in a season-best time in the 4 X 200 relay at state.
Running on Friday afternoon, the Cub team of Chase Dobson, Erik Fevold, Alex Avalos and Peyton Sharp teamed up to run a 1:32.85. The quartet place third in their heat and 16th overall in 3A.
Nevada didn’t have its best effort in the 4 X 100 later on Friday. Going with Sharp on the opening, Fevold and Avalos in the middle and Dobson running the anchor, the Cubs finished 23rd in :46.48.
Dobson also ran individually in the 100 on Thursday. He clocked in at :11.77 to place 16th.
The Nevada girls had one competitor at state. Junior Alyssa Boyd took part in the 3A girls’ high jump and she cleared four feet, 10 inches to place 18th.
Four Colo-Nesco athletes also took part at state in Class 1A.
On the girls’ side Devin Francis finished 13th in the discus after peaking with a throw of 102-11. Sam Riese also participated in the discus, but she scratched on all three throws.
Shayla Dean ran the open 400 for the Royal girls. She came in 20th with a time of 1:03.66.
Tyler Erickson was the lone member of the Royal boys’ team to run at state. He ran the 400 low hurdles on Friday and finished 18th in a personal-best time of :58.82.
