MAXWELL — The Colo-NESCO volleyball team took too long to get things clicking against Collins-Maxwell in the Class 1A regional first round Oct. 16 at Maxwell.
The Royals were overwhelmed by 25-10 and 25-13 scores in the first two sets. They played much tougher in the third set, but ran out of gas late in a 25-19 loss.
“We kind of had some jitters — they were really nervous for tonight and you could see it those first and second sets,” Colo-NESCO head volleyball coach Jessica Owens said. “After we got those jitters out the third set, we really started to see them play. Unfortunately, it was a little too late.”
In the third set, Colo-NESCO was in control most of the way. The Royals took an 18-12 lead on a Gracie Kettwig ace.
“That third set we started to set it up a lot more and we got some big hits,” Owens said. “That momentum from the big hits helped us throughout that third set.”
But then the Royals went flat. Collins-Maxwell responded with a 13-1 run to steal the win and end the match.
“We were just making little errors,” Owens said. “Not popping it up to be able to set it up and hit it. There were just little things that we were lacking.”
Colo-NESCO was inconsistent offensively, finishing with 15 kills against 18 attack errors. The Royals were also held to one ace serving and one block defensively.
Collins-Maxwell put up 19 kills against 11 errors and finished with five blocks and four aces, improving to 14-12.
Colo-NESCO ended its season at 9-17. The Royals nearly doubled their win total from a year ago when they finished 5-16.
“We can’t be anything but proud about this season,” Owens said. “It’s the best season we’ve had since I’ve been here.”
Kettwig had five kills and one ace; Lauryn Hill five digs, three kills and one block and Maggie Barten and Emmy Hostetler three kills apiece for the Royals against Collins-Maxwell. Rylee Purvis added one kill, Megan Carlson nine assists, Emma Sarver six digs and Lindsey Riese and Morgan Sluis one dig apiece.
Hannah Caple delivered 23 digs and three aces and Josie Wierson seven kills and three blocks for Collins-Maxwell. Reagan Franzen added seven assists, seven digs, four kills and one ace and Elise Robertson 10 digs, two kills and two assists for the Spartans.
