GLADBROOK — The Colo-NESCO football team found some success against a tough team in its final game of the season Friday, falling to 8-man playoff qualifier Gladbrook-Reinbeck by a 56-14 score at Gladbrook.

The Royals didn’t have the firepower to go toe-to-toe with a Rebel team that ended the regular season 7-2 and won 8-man District 5 with a perfect 7-0 record. But they didn’t roll over, finishing 1-9 on the season and 1-6 in the district.

“This was a very enjoyable game against a very good opponent and playoff qualifier,” Colo-NESCO head football coach Josh Nessa said. “Our seniors played and led well in the final game of their careers. Our players never gave up. We felt a win would be a very big difficult task, but we had some small victories — we made the Rebels punt, we didn’t allow a passing touchdown and we scored against their varsity team. We also created a fumble, but the Rebels recovered it.”

Brandon Roberts scored the first Colo-NESCO touchdown against Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s first string with a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Andrew Grover followed with a successful 2-point conversion run for the Royals.

Colo-NESCO’s second score came in the fourth quarter, when Francis Bower found paydirt on a 10-yard run.

Colo-NESCO totaled 179 yards and gave up 399. Kelly Gray ran for 62 yards, Bower had 41 yards rushing and 25 receiving and Roberts ran for 40 yards and threw for 31.

Bower also made 7.5 tackles on defense. Ethan Wilson added 4.5 stops, Jake Perry four, Roberts 3.5 and Adam Texeira 2.5.

Nessa said it will be tough to replace the services of Gray, Bower, Wilson, Texeira and the rest of the senior class.

“We will miss our seniors and their leadership,” Nessa said. “Despite our record, they will leave a legacy in the players that return next year.”

Colton Clark ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns for Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Friday. Eli Thede added 80 yards and two scores rushing and Lane Bach made nine tackles and a fumble recovery.
