BONDURANT — The Nevada volleyball team picked up two victories in five matches at the Bluejay Invitational in Bondurant Saturday.


The Cubs defeated Heart of Iowa Conference rival Gilbert in three sets and swept Cedar Rapids Kennedy during the tournament.


In the victory over Gilbert, the Cubs won the first set, 21-14, suffered a 21-11 loss in the second, then came back to win the rally game, 15-12. Nevada took down Kennedy by scores of 21-11 and 21-17.


Nevada’s three losses came against Pella Christian, Dallas Center-Grimes and Bondurant-Farrar.


The Cubs lost Pella Christian in three sets — winning the opener by a 21-17 score, then dropping 22-20 and 15-13 heartbreakers. Nevada was swept by DCG — 21-10 and 21-15 — and Bondurant-Farrar — 21-12 and 21-15.


Morgan Tupper had 31 digs, 21 assists, nine kills and six aces and Amanda Fortmann 32 assists, 30 digs, three aces and two kills for Nevada during the tournament. Kacie Rewerts added 33 kills, 10 blocks and seven digs and Sydney Mosinski 16 blocks and 11 kills.


Ellie Gray chipped in 44 digs, nine assists and two aces; Jaeden Heintz 27 digs, six assists and one ace and Madison Stevens 16 digs, one assist and one ace from the back row for the Cubs. Mikayla Long contributed seven kills, six digs and four blocks; Hannah Thomsen six kills, five blocks and two digs and Maddie Dunham one kill, assist and ace apiece.


DES MOINES — Nevada made short work of Saydel to pick up its first Heart of Iowa Conference victory Sept. 13 at Saydel High School in Des Moines.


The Cubs swept the Eagles by scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-4. The victory put Nevada at 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the HOIC.


Serving was Nevada’s strong point in the match. The Cubs were 72 of 74 and racked up an incredible 17 aces.


On offense, Nevada had 28 kills and 14 errors in 74 attacks. The Cubs came up with 36 digs and six blocks defensively.


Mikayla Long, Kacie Rewerts and Hannah Thomsen each had six kills as part of balanced attack for Nevada. Long also came up with four blocks, Rewerts one block and Thomsen one dig.


Morgan Tupper continued her brilliant all-around play for the Cubs with 10 assists, one block and five kills, digs and aces apieces. Sydney Mosinski chipped in three kills and one dig, Kelby Rewerts one kill and two digs and Ashlyn Sporrer one kill.


Amanda Fortmann dished out 12 assists at setter. Fortmann also came up with eight digs and one ace.


Ellie Gray led Nevada defensively in the back row with 15 digs and she handed out two assists as well. Gray was also the team’s top server, going 23 of 23 with four aces.


Madison Stevens went 17 of 17 serving with three aces, Jaeden Heintz put up four aces and three digs and Katelyn Kingsbury chipped in one dig.
