NEVADA — A record passing performance from Kody Kruschwitz sparked the Nevada football team to its first victory of the season Friday with a 41-13 rout of Perry at Cub Stadium.

Kruschwitz completed 25 of 33 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He surpassed the program record of 351 yards passing in a single game set by Macade Matuska in 2015.

Andrew Saunders also had a record night at receiving for the Cubs. Kruschwitz’s main target made 11 grabs for 192 yards and two scores.

Kruschwitz hooked up with Saunders on a 62-yard scoring pass in the second quarter and a 16-yard strike for six to cap the scoring in the fourth. Kruschwitz also found Sam Abraham on a 35-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter.

Abraham also had a big night receiving with seven catches for 85 yards. Joven Nelson stepped up with four catches for 67 yards and Jacob Strottman complemented the explosive passing attack with 63 yards and three touchdowns rushing.

Nevada racked up 454 yards of offense, going to 1-2 on the season. But while the Cub offense stood out, the defense was just as strong.

The Cubs limited the Bluejays to 188 total yards. Most of Perry’s production came after the game had long been decided, as both of its touchdowns came in garbage time during the fourth quarter after Nevada had built a 41-0 lead.

On special teams, Jack Cahill made 5 of 6 extra points and averaged 47 yards on seven kickoffs, Kruschwitz averaged 34.5 yards on two punts and Strottman returned a punt 34 yards.

“We played well Friday night in all three phases of the game and played consistent football,” Nevada head football coach Andrew Kleeman said. “The kids made big plays, as well as executed, which was fun to see. We’ve been emphasizing consistency, and I’m really proud of how the kids responded after a couple of tough losses to start the season.”

Strottman made five tackles and two sacks and Ross Uthe also picked up a sack to anchor the Cubs on defense. Nelson added 4.5 tackles, Abraham and Anthony Ellis four apiece and Jay Calentine and Connor Hines each finished with three.

The Cubs wrap up non-district play this Friday with a road game at South Tama (0-3). The game will start at 7:30 p.m. at South Tama High School in Tama.

Perry fell to 0-3. Kaleb Olejniczak ran for 112 yards, threw for 56 and accounted for two touchdowns, Kato Dougan caught two passes for 45 yards and a score and Justin Stammer added 30 yards rushing for the Bluejays.
