JEFFERSON — The Nevada football team couldn’t slow a balanced Greene County attack and the Cubs were also hurt by turnovers in a 38-10 loss to the Rams Friday at Jefferson.

Greene County (2-0) threw for 231 yards and ran for 153. Nevada did well through the air with 192 yards, but the Cubs only put up 46 on the ground and they had three turnovers to fall to 0-2 on the season.

“We had a tough loss Friday,” Nevada head football coach Andrew Kleeman said. “We did some nice things on both sides of the ball at times, but struggled with consistency and being able to capitalize when we had opportunities. Greene County did a good job of taking advantage of our mistakes.”

Nevada trailed 24-10 at the half. Greene County took a 3-0 lead after one quarter, then both teams picked up the pace offensively over the next 12 minutes.

Kody Kruschwitz fired his sixth touchdown pass of the season with a 34-yard strike to Andrew Saunders in the final seconds of the first half for Nevada’s only touchdown of the game. Jack Cahill booted a 35-yard field goal midway through the second quarter for the Cubs.

Brent Riley threw touchdown passes of 87 yards to Colby Kafer and 15 yards to Lance Hughes in the first half for Greene County. Kafer added a 4-yard scoring run and Cael Fisher kicked a 23-yard field goal for the Rams in the opening half.

Nevada struggled to get anything going on offense in the second quarter. Greene County put the game away in the fourth when Clint Dennhardt ran one in from 17 yards and Riley found Carter Morton on a 50-yard scoring pass.

Kruschwitz completed 20 of 38 passes for 192 yards, Saunders made eight catches for 90 yards and Jakob Strottman ran for 43 yards and added 21 receiving for Nevada. Blake Bottorf added four catches for 36 yards, Sam Abraham made two grabs for 30 yards and Joven Nelson chipped in a 15-yard reception for the Cubs on offense.

Strottman made nine tackles and recovered a fumble on defense for Nevada. Ayden Rhodes added six tackles, Nelson four and Abraham, Cahill and Ross Uthe three apiece.

Riley completed 13 of 23 passes for 231 yards and three scores for Greene County. Morton made three catches for 100 yards, Kafer added 83 yards receiving and 62 rushing and Dennhardt ran for 84 yards.

Up next for Nevada is a non-district home game against Perry (0-2).

“I think our best football is coming, because the signs are there,” Kleeman said. “We just have to work on being more opportunistic and consistent on both sides of the ball.”

The game takes place at Cub Stadium in Nevada and is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
