Nevada senior Jack Higgins was honored for a tremendous senior season in baseball by being named third-team all-state in Class 3A by the Iowa Print Sports Writers Association in 2018.
Higgins was a terror at the plate for Nevada all season, helping the Cubs turn in their second winning season in a row with a 15-13 record.
During the regular season, Higgins hit .589 with a .680 on-base percentage and .904 slugging average. He connected for 15 doubles, one triple and two home runs, and finished with 19 walks, 10 steals, 32 runs and 45 RBIs.
Higgins was also a valuable contributor in the field at both third and first base and he threw 9 ⅔ innings on the mound.
The IPSWA 3A first team was made up of: Davenport Assumption’s Julien Broderson and Nick Gottilla; Harlan’s Brett Sears and Ryan Doran; Carlisle’s Nate Mortimer and Nic McCay; Webster City’s Max Hackbarth; Bishop Heelan Catholic’s Colin Kasperbauer and Hunter Hope; Sergeant Bluff-Luton’s Spencer Kleene; Solon’s Luke Ira; Spencer’s Brady Kluender and Algona’s Trevor Bormann.
Ira was named captain of the 3A team after hitting .455 with a state-best 19 home runs and 3A-best 58 RBIs, and going 6-1 on the mound with a 1.73 earned-run average.
