MARTENSDALE - The Colo-NESCO baseball team wasn’t able to keep pace with Ankeny Christian Academy in the Class 1A district quarterfinals July 10 at Martensdale, falling to the Eagles by a 7-1 score.
Colo-NESCO took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second inning on an RBI groundout by Philip Bower with the bases loaded. But ACA came back with four runs in the third inning and three in the fourth — all seven runs occurring with two outs.
Colo-NESCO ended the season at 11-12. The Royals made great strides from a year ago when they finished 7-21-1.
Jacob Clatt singled and scored and Kelly Gray and Bryce Niemeyer each singled once for the only Royal hits of the game. Bower drove in a run and stole a base and Ryan Banks walked once for Colo-NESCO.
Niemeyer took the loss, giving up six runs — five earned — on eight hits with two strikeouts and no walks in 3 ⅔ innings. Shawn Gilbert allowed one run on two hits and a walk in one inning and Gray surrendered one hit in 1 ⅓ scoreless innings with no walks.
Brayden Jacobs was 4-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs and Zach Dueker was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs for ACA on offense. Dueker was the winning Eagle pitcher, allowing one run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 2 ⅓ innings.
