EDDYVILLE - Nevada came oh, so close, against No. 6 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the Class 3A regional softball quarterfinals July 3 at Eddyville.
Trailing by just one run, the Cubs had the bases loaded in the top of the seventh. But they were unable to push anyone across against Rocket pitcher Randie Richmond, settling for a heartbreaking 4-3 loss.
“Our game with Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont was a really good high school softball game,” Nevada head softball coach John Bass said. “Both teams played at a high level and made plays when they had to. All you can ask for is to have a chance to win the game in your own hands and we did.”
Nevada scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. The Cubs still held a 3-2 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth, when EBF scored two runs to move in front.
With the loss, Nevada finished the season at 9-14. The Cubs only won four games in 2017.
“It was a tough way to end our season and a tough way to say goodbye to our two seniors — Grace (Francis) and Mackenzie (Garrett),” Bass said. “Hopefully this fuels our off season — we made great strides this year.”
Francis and Garrett both went out playing at a high level.
Francis was 3-for-3 against EBF with a walk and an RBI. Garrett allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks in six innings in a gritty effort on the mound.
Katie Sullivan added two hits and Ellie Gray singled and scored for Nevada. Brooklynn Jensen and Emma Griffin each drove in a run, Addi Vorm walked and scored and Caitlyn Sharp stole a base and scored one run for the Cubs.
EBF advanced to the regional semifinals with a 29-7 record.
Richmond earned the win after allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in seven innings. Faith Roberts doubled and hit a solo home run, Rylee German doubled and knocked in a run and Richmond and Madysen Wade each singled and scored for the Rockets.
