ROLAND — The Colo-NESCO softball team fell just short versus South Hamilton and struggled in its outing with Roland-Story at the Kiwanis Invitational Saturday in Roland.


The Royals suffered an 8-7 setback to South Hamilton in eight innings. Colo-NESCO jumped out to a 6-1 lead, only to see the Hawks score three times in the third, once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to move in front.


Colo-NESCO briefly regained some momentum in the seventh, plating a run in the top of the inning and shutting out South Hamilton in the bottom half to force an extra frame. The Royals were unable to keep it going in the eighth, going scoreless in their half, then giving up the winning run in the bottom of the inning.


Mackenna Ruffcorn was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs and Chelsea Henze finished 2-for-5 with a double, run and three RBIs for Colo-NESCO in the loss to the Hawks. Rylee Purvis ended up 2-for-5 with two runs and a steal; McKenzie Niemeyer singled, walked and scored twice; Gracie Kettwig was 1-for-4 with an RBI; Claire Skinner and Megan Carlson both singled and Jenna Hill scored two times and stole a base.


Purvis took the loss on the mound after giving up four earned runs on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout in 3 ⅔ innings of relief. Ruffcorn started and surrendered four runs on six hits and a walk in 3 ⅓ innings.


Katie Johnson earned the win for South Hamilton after allowing six earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts, going all eight innings. Cortney Harris was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of runs and RBIs apiece for the Hawks at the plate.


Roland-Story, the No. 9 team in Class 3A, handed Colo-NESCO a 12-0 setback in three innings.


Colo-NESCO didn’t get a hit offensively against the Norse. Carlson was the losing pitcher after giving up nine earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 1 ⅔ innings and Purvis surrendered three runs — one earned — on three hits and a walk with one strikeout in 1 ⅓ innings.


The Royals concluded the day with a 6-9 overall record.

GILBERTVILLE - Colo-NESCO was hit hard in the first inning and never recovered in a 12-2 loss to Don Bosco in five innings Friday at Gilbertville.


The Royals allowed seven runs in the first inning, falling to 4-4 in the Iowa Star Conference. Don Bosco added two more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to end the game early.


Colo-NESCO scored one run apiece in the first and fifth frames. Kenzie Niemeyer and Claire Skinner both singled and scored for the only Royal hits.


Mackenna Ruffcorn allowed nine runs — just three earned — on seven hits and four walks with one strikeout in three innings as the losing pitcher. Rylee Purvis gave up three runs on two hits and a walk in two innings.

MCCALLSBURG - Colo-NESCO came through with its fourth Iowa Star Conference victory June 13 with a 12-3 dismantling of GMG at McCallsburg.


The Royals finished with 11 hits. They took a 3-2 lead after one inning, then produced a huge seven-run third to take complete control.


Rylee Purvis, Mackenna Ruffcorn, Chelsea Henze, Gracie Kettwig and Claire Skinner each collected two hits for Colo-NESCO. Purvis also walked twice and scored a run; Ruffcorn picked up an RBI; Henze doubled, scored and drove home two runs; Kettwig scored three times and knocked in a run and Skinner scored once and finished with three RBIs.


Molly Barten was 1-for-3 with a run, Morgan Lytle scored and drove in a run, Jenna Banks walked once and scored twice, Jenna Hill picked up a free pass and McKenzie Niemeyer and Izabell Voelker each scored a run.


Purvis was the winning pitcher. She went all seven innings, giving up one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.


Kelsey Vaverka allowed nine earned runs with five walks and a strikeout in six innings as the losing GMG pitcher.

TRAER - A top-notch pitching performance from Rylee Purvis wasn’t enough for Colo-NESCO in a tough 1-0 loss to North Tama June 11 at Traer.


Purvis gave up five hits and only one walk, going all seven innings in a losing effort. The only run she allowed came in the bottom of the second inning and she had two strikeouts.


Colo-NESCO matched North Tama with five hits on offense. Purvis and battery mate Chelsea Henze both doubled, Molly Barten went 2-for-3 and Mackenna Ruffcorn singled.


Jenna Hill walked and stole a base and McKenzie Niemeyer also drew a walk for the Royals.


Tessa Dvorak earned the victory for North Tama. Dvorak struck out three and walked two in seven innings, and she also doubled and scored the game’s only run.
