NEVADA - The Nevada baseball team wasn’t able to withstand a late Gilbert surge in a 14-6 loss to the Tigers Friday at Billy Sunday Field in Nevada.
The Cubs rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to take a 6-5 lead after four innings. Nevada scored a run in the second and four in the third to even the score then plated another run in the bottom of the fourth.
But Gilbert burned Nevada for five runs in the top of the fifth and added four more scores in the sixth. Nevada went cold offensively over the final three innings, falling to 8-4 overall and 1-4 in the Heart of Iowa conference.
Bronzon Mason was 3-for-4 with two runs, steals and RBIs apiece for Nevada in a losing effort. Kyle Bauman drove in two runs; Jack Higgins doubled, walked, scored and knocked in a run; Thomas Crawford was 1-for-3 with a walk, steal and two runs and Trent Stahl singled and scored.
Cam Shill was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Brock Dutton walked and stole a base and Preston Cattanach drew three free passes for the Cubs.
Brock Dutton was the losing pitcher, giving up seven runs in ⅔ of an inning. James Carsrud allowed five runs — three earned — on four hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts in 2 ⅓ innings.
Carter Franzen surrendered one run on two hits with two strikeouts in two innings. Cael Franzen struck out two and walked one in one inning and Cattanach threw one hitless inning.
Matt Barragy was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs and Nathan Chasey doubled and drove in four runs for Gilbert. Easton Johnson got the win for the Tigers after giving up one run on one hit and three walks with one strikeout in three innings.
CONRAD - A humongous second inning carried Nevada to a 20-1 drubbing of BCLUW in four innings June 5 at Conrad.
The Cubs went off for an amazing 17 runs in the second to quickly turn the game into a rout.
Preston Cattanach homered, walked three times, scored three runs and picked up five RBIs and Jack Higgins was 3-for-3 with a double, walk, three runs and four RBIs to lead the Cub onslaught. Trent Stahl doubled twice, scored two runs and picked up three RBIs; Cam Shill was 3-for-3 with two runs and RBIs apiece; Brock Dutton went 1-for-2 with a run, steal and RBI and Keaton Fry walked and tallied two runs and RBIs apiece.
Kyle Bauman walked, scored two times and drove in a run; Thomas Crawford walked three times, scored twice and picked up one run and RBI apiece; Bronzon Mason scored twice and pushed one run across and Dennis Garcia stole a base and scored.
Dylan Sporrer was the winning pitcher. Sporrer threw all four innings and gave up one run on two hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
PRAIRIE CITY - A big start and a strong finish did the job for Nevada in a 10-6 victory at Prairie City-Monroe June 4 in Prairie City.
The Cubs scored five runs in the second inning to build an early 6-0 lead. PCM closed within 7-5 after four innings, but Nevada pushed three runs across in the seventh to hold off the Mustangs for its first Heart of Iowa Conference victory.
Jack Higgins was 3-for-5 with a double, two steals and three RBIs and Trent Stahl finished 4-for-5 with three steals and two runs and RBIs apiece for Nevada in the win. Bronzon Mason homered, Kyle Bauman was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI; Thomas Crawford finished 2-for-3 with two runs, two steals, a walk and an RBI and Preston Cattanach ended up 2-for-4 with a run and a steal.
Keaton Fry added two hits, Brock Dutton singled and scored and Cam Shill chipped in a single for Nevada. Dennis Garcia scored two runs and stole a base for the Cubs.
James Carsrud got the win after allowing five runs — just one earned — on two hits with two walks and strikeouts apiece in three innings. Dutton earned the save after throwing four innings and surrendering one unearned run on one walk with four strikeouts.
