NEVADA — The Nevada baseball team enjoyed its second explosive hitting performance in as many games May 22 with a 17-3 drubbing of Baxter in five innings at Billy Sunday Field.


Nevada took a 10-3 lead through three innings, then erupted for seven runs in the fourth to put the game away early. The Cubs racked up an impressive 18 hits and added 11 steals in the win.


Trent Stahl, Bronzon Mason and Jack Higgins each collected three hits for Nevada. Stahl also had four runs, three steals and one double, walk and RBI apiece; Mason walked, stole a base, drove in a run and scored twice and Higgins doubled twice, drove in five runs and chipped in one run and steal apiece.


Cam Shill, Brock Dutton and James Carsrud each finished with two hits. Shill added five RBI, and one double, run and steal apiece; Dutton doubled, scored three times and drove home two runs and Carsrud chipped in one run and an RBI.


Thomas Crawford went 1-for-2 with two runs, two steals, a walk and an RBI and Kyle Bauman singled, scored and swiped two bases. Preston Cattanach singled and drove in a run, Dennis Garcia stole a base and scored and Keaton Fry crossed the plate once.


Carter Franzen allowed three runs — two earned — on two hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 2 ⅔ innings as the winning Cub pitcher. Cattanach gave up one hit and struck out two batters in 1 ⅓ innings of scoreless work and Higgins threw one scoreless inning with three strikeouts.


Carter Nelsen gave up 10 runs — five earned — with five strikeouts and one walk in three innings as the losing Baxter pitcher. He also doubled and drove in a run and Travis Lindemoen went 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs and a steal for the Bolts at the plate.

EAGLE GROVE — Nevada opened the season with a big offensive performance, defeating Eagle Grove by a 13-7 score May 21 at Eagle Grove.


The Cubs drilled Eagle Grove pitching for 13 hits. Nevada fell behind 6-4 after three innings, but evened the score at 7-7 by the end of the fifth, then exploded for six runs in the sixth to take charge.


Trent Stahl was 4-for-5 with two steals, runs and RBIs apiece; Jack Higgins finished 3-for-3 with a double, walk, steal, two runs and three RBIs and Cam Shill finished 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, two steals, three runs and a pair of RBIs for Nevada at the plate. Kyle Bauman was 2-for-4 with a run, steal and two RBIs; Keaton Fry doubled and knocked in two runs and Thomas Crawford doubled, walked, stole a base and scored twice for the Cubs.


Bronzon Mason walked, drove in a run and scored twice and Preston Cattanach walked and had one run and RBI apiece. Brock Dutton chipped in a steal.


Shill gave up four runs — two earned — on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks in three innings as the winning pitcher. Dutton threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and James Carsrud allowed three runs — one earned — on two hits and walks apiece with four strikeouts in two innings.


Nikolas Padilla allowed six earned runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in 1 ⅔ innings as the losing Eagle Grove pitcher. John Mosley went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI to pace the Eagles on offense.
