AMES - The Nevada boys’ golf team opened the postseason on a strong note by winning the Class 3A sectional meet at the Ames Golf and Country Club Friday.

Nevada shot a 314 over 18 holes to beat Ballard by nine strokes for the team championship out of eight competing schools. Nevada and Ballard advance to the 3A district meet at the Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake this Friday.

“I think we are all very pleased with the overall team performance,” Nevada head boys’ golf coach Ryan Brown said. “This meet was a great example of the depth and diversity on our team.”

Cam Shill and Tyler Sansgaard both shot under 80 on the day for Nevada.

Shill scored a 76 with two rounds of 38 and Sansgaard shot a 38 out and 40 in to finish with a 78. Shill placed fourth individually and Sangaard tied for fifth.

Caden Jones and Harold Dobernecker shot right at 80 to turn in the final counted scores for Nevada. Jones shot a 41 out and 39 in and Dobernecker had rounds of 39 and 41.

Dylan Sporrer finished with an 81 after carding respective rounds of 39 and 42. Kyle Linder also competed for Nevada, shooting an 85 with rounds of 39 and 46.

Sporrer and Linder had been Nevada’s most consistent golfers throughout the season, so the sectional meet showed just how much talent the Cubs possess as a whole and how they can rely on several different golfers to step up when needed.

“Our team is fully committed to the success of the other players — they have bought into team first, an extremely important concept as they play each hole,” Brown said. “ They are making decisions that are in the best interest of our overall team score.”

Webster City’s Nathan Ferrell and Gilbert’s Tommy Doyle both shot right at par with identical rounds of 71 as the top individual golfers at the meet. Ballard’s Noah Hartman came in third with a 75.
