JEFFERSON — The Nevada boys placed second overall and the Cub girls earned one gold, silver and bronze medal apiece in a weather-shortened Heart of Iowa Conference track meet May 1 at Jefferson.

The meet was called due to inclement weather before the completion of three events — the boys’ 1,600/girls’ 1,500-meter run and the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays.

The Cub boys won three events and added three silver medals and one bronze, scoring 118 points to edge North Polk by 3.5 points for second out of eight teams. Gilbert won the boys’ HOIC title with 135 points.

The Nevada boys took first in both the sprint medley and 4 X 200-meter relays — dominating both events. The Cubs also produced an individual champion in the high jump.

Brendan Sellberg, Preston Cattanach, Rodrigo Perez and Joven Nelson won the sprint medley in one minute, 35.57 seconds. Gilbert came in second with a 1:37.62 showing.

In the 4 X 200, the Cub team of Sellberg, Jakob Strottman, Perez and Nelson finished in a HOIC-record time of 1:30.82. Saydel was well in back of the Cubs in second with a time of 1:35.01.

Om’Unique Wilkerson won the boys’ high jump for Nevada after clearing six feet even. Gilbert’s Eric Swart jumped 5-10 to place second.

Sam Abraham was runner-up in the long jump for Nevada with a jump of 20-8 and Wilkerson took fourth after peaking at a distance of 20-4. Gilbert’s Ajay Reed won with a 21-5 showing.

Malachi Hornbuckle was runner-up in the 3,200 and third in the 800 for Nevada.

Hornbuckle’s 3,200 time of 10:15.60 only trailed the 10:13.82 by South Hamilton’s Logan Peters. Hornbuckle ran the 800 in 2:08.45 to come in behind Peters (2:03.46) and Gilbert’s Keegan Sturdy (2:07.99.).

Nevada also won a silver medal in the shuttle hurdle relay. Wilkerson, Abraham and Strottman were joined by Luke Merfeld in running a 1:00.96 to finish just behind Gilbert’s time of 1:00.10.

In the girls’ competition, Nevada received a victory from Kacie Rewerts in the 3,000, a runner-up effort by Addi Vorm in the discus and a third-place time from Gabby Sampson in the 800. The Cub girls scored 57 points to place sixth out of eight teams.

Rewerts blew away the rest of the 3,000 field. She crossed the finish line in 11:12.27 to beat Gilbert’s Maggie Pollard by nearly 30 seconds for the gold.

In the girls’ discus, Addi Vorm threw 101-9 to take second for Nevada behind the throw of 103 feet even by Saydel’s Sarah Stocker. Bailey Crain finished fourth for the Cubs with a toss of 96 feet.

Gabby Sampson picked up a bronze in the 800 for the Cub girls after running a 2:41.30. Gilbert’s Cara Heuer won in 2:25.91 and North Polk’s Sophie Blanchard took second with a 2:32.40 showing.

The Nevada girls also took fourth in the sprint medley, 4 X 800 and 4 X 200.

Emily Plate, Samara Sharp, Caitlyn Sharp and Sydney Mosinski finished the sprint medley in 2:00.59. The same foursome completed the 4 X 200 in 1:54.50.

Madison Davis, Eliana Hornbuckle, Ryanne Barker and Sampson clocked in at 11:14.71 in the 4 X 800.
