NEVADA - Nevada took two out of three games to place third at the Nevada boys’ soccer tournament Saturday at Cub Stadium.
Nevada knocked Kuemper Catholic by a 2-0 score, then fell to eventual champion Marshalltown by a 4-2 decision. That put the Cubs in the third-place game, where they down rival Gilbert by a 3-1 score to improve their record to 6-4 on the season.
In the victory over Gilbert, Brendan Sellberg scored eight minutes, 21 seconds into the game and that held up for Nevada going into the locker room. Gilbert tied the score a little over seven minutes into the second half, when Jack Dressen found the net for the Tigers.
But it didn’t take long for Nevada to answer. Devin See netted a goal 11 minutes into the half to give Nevada the lead for good. Freshman Jose Buenrrostro iced the game for the Cubs by scoring with 6:59 left.
“It feels good,” Nevada center-back Dennis Garcia said. “Home tournament and we haven’t beaten Gilbert in a couple years.”
Garcia keyed a Nevada defense that was out to atone for its performance in the loss to Marshalltown. The Cubs locked down on Gilbert after the Tiger goal, and freshman keeper Gage Maiefski finished with six saves.
“We kept our composure,” Garcia said. “Gage really stepped up — (he) played really well as a freshman.”
Buenrrostro also scored during Nevada’s win over Kuemper Catholic. With teams focusing on stopping Sellberg and See, Buenrrostro is starting to emerge as a force on offense for the Cubs.
“It feels great,” Buenrrostro said. “A lot of compliments out here and it makes me feel great to be out here with them.”
Emilio Saldana, Rodrigo Perez and Henry Nelson each had an assist for Nevada against Gilbert.
In the win over Kuemper Catholic, Taylor Maiefski scored Nevada’s other goal and Anthony Ellis had an assist. Gage Maiefski finished the game with five saves.
Nevada came up short against Marshalltown, despite getting off 11 shots to the Bobcats’ 10.
Sellberg and Jack Cahill each scored against Marshalltown and Garcia handed out an assist. Gage Maiefski totaled eight saves at keeper.
Jose Torres put up a hat-trick with three goals and Edgar Armenta added one goal and assist apiece for Marshalltown.
ADEL - Nevada wasn’t on top of its game on April 30 as the Cubs traveled to Adel and suffered a 6-1 loss at the hands of Adel-Desoto-Minburn.
Nevada allowed 21 shots and only got off six, suffering its third loss of the season. Devin See scored the only Cub goal off an assist from Rodrigo Perez.
Nevada keeper Gage Maiefski made 12 saves in a losing effort.
Eli Schwarzkopf totaled one goal and two assists and Davis Barton and Herberto Ponce one goal and assist apiece for ADM. Braidon Lee and Dakota Kahler chipped in one goal apiece for the Tigers.
