MAXWELL - An explosive first half enabled Nevada to put Collins-Maxwell away early for a 5-1 road victory Thursday at Maxwell.
The Cubs took advantage of a strong wind to their back to dominate possession in the first half. They really got going midway through the half, scoring all five of their goals over the last 21 minutes.
“Our movement and talking was good in the first half,” Nevada forward Anthony Ellis said. “We’re trying to do new things when we’re attacking on the offense and trying to get more movement up top. We’re moving the ball well and we’re making good runs. Everything was working.”
Ellis scored two goals and added one assist for Nevada. He netted the first Cub score at the 19-minute, 25-second mark and added another goal 11 minutes later.
Taylor Maiefski also put two balls into the net for Nevada during the opening 40 minutes.
Maiefski put Nevada’s second goal in the net just three minutes after the first Ellis goal. He also scored the Cubs’ final goal with 50 seconds left in the first half.
“We just had a lot of good balls at the end there,” Maiefski said. “I think everyone was playing well at the end of the first half.”
Maiefski’s younger brother Gage is Nevada’s starting keeper. Taylor wanted to make life as easy as possible for his younger brother — making just his second start at goalie.
“I’m trying to keep pressure off of him because he’s a freshman starting,” Taylor Maiefski said. “That’s a lot of pressure on him because he’s never played with these big guys before.”
Kody Kruschwitz converted a header off a corner kick by Dennis Garcia for Nevada’s other goal. Devin See, Emilio Saldana and Ayden Rhodes each finished with one assist for the Cubs, who improved to 4-2.
Collins-Maxwell fell to 3-4. The Spartans played well over the final 40 minutes, they just dug themselves into too big a hole.
Will Hitchler scored the Spartan goal at the 67:57 mark of the game off an assist from Carter Merryman.
