MORAVIA - The Nevada boys’ golf team made a huge statement April 26 by winning the prestigious 20-team Mohawk Invitational at The Preserve course on Lake Rathbun.
Nevada shot a 317 over 18 holes to beat fellow Class 3A power Pella by six strokes and Centerville by nine for the team victory. The Cubs also produced the individual medalist in Kyle Linder.
“It was interesting to see how we matched up with some other quality 3A schools (Pella, Oskaloosa, Centerville),” Nevada head boys’ golf coach Ryan Brown said. “This was a long day on a challenging course. We tried to focus on finishing well — after five or hours in the sun, walking the course and dealing with the mental challenges of the round — it is extremely important to reach down inside and find the mental fortitude to finish the last three or four holes without giving more strokes away.”
Linder delivered a score of 75 to beat Knoxville’s Tyler Vaske and Oskaloosa’s Spencer Tucker by one stroke for first individually. Linder displayed great consistency, shooting a 37 out and 38 in to get the victory.
Harold Dobernecker finished with an 80, and Dylan Sporrer and James Carsrud each delivered an 81 to complete the Cub scoring. Dobernecker shot two rounds of 40, Sporrer a 43 out and 38 in and Carsrud carded a 39 and 42 respectively.
Cam Shill just missed the scoring cut with an 82. Shill shot a two rounds of 41.
