NEVADA - The Nevada girls’ soccer team has made it known it is still one of the premier programs in Class 1A after taking down Pella in a shootout, 1-0, April 26 at Cub Stadium for its second victory over a top-five team in four days.
Pella (6-2) was ranked No. 4 in 2A and the Cubs had just beaten the then-No. 4 1A team in Columbus Catholic on April 23. The win over Columbus Catholic got Nevada ranked fourth in 1A and the win over Pella put the Cubs’ season record at 8-2.
Regulation and two overtime periods ended between Nevada and Pella with neither team being able to find the net. Cub keeper Grace Francis was excellent, finishing with 11 saves, and she received great support from a defense anchored by Kacie Rewerts, Abbie Lindsey, Haley Miller and Aubrey Gibson.
In the shootout, Nevada made three of four penalty kicks and Pella was only able to convert two of five attempts. Francis stepped up with two clutch stops, including the final Pella attempt to secure the victory.
Lindsey, Hannah Thomsen and Hattie Rhodes were the three Cubs to convert their penalty kicks in the shootout. Pella received goals from Grace Held and Josie Lickteig.
NEVADA - Nevada followed up a big win over Columbus Catholic with an 8-0 rout of Iowa Falls-Alden April 24 at Cub Stadium.
The Cubs fired off 21 shots and only allowed two in the decisive victory. Madison Stevens and freshman Kayla Dunson each recorded a hat-trick with three goals apiece for Nevada in the win.
Addi Vorm added one goal and two assists and Hannah Thomsen also netted a goal for the Cubs. J.J. Williamson distributed two assists and Erin Coogler, Meredith Harter and Haley Miller each dished out one.
Erica Sporrer made two saves at keeper to help secure the shutout.
NEVADA - Nevada earned a 2-1 statement victory over Columbus Catholic in overtime April 23 at Cub Stadium.
The Cubs downed the No. 4 team in Class 1A after a goal by Hannah Thomsen around three minutes into overtime off an assist from Madison Stevens. Hattie Rhodes scored Nevada’s only goal in regulation off an assist from Grace Francis.
Nevada survived despite giving up 21 shots. Francis made seven saves at keeper.
Bella Fain scored off an assist from Olivia Fain to accounted for the Columbus Catholic goal.
