NEVADA - The Nevada boys kept up their strong start to the season with a runner-up performance and the Cub girls totaled three silver and bronze medals apiece at the Nevada Coed Invitational April 5 at Cub Stadium.


The Nevada boys won five events. The Cubs also picked up five silver and two bronze medals, scoring 145 points to come behind only Gilbert’s score of 182 among eight competing teams.


In relays, Nevada won the 4 X 100-meter and shuttle hurdle events and took second in the distance medley.


Brendan Sellberg, Preston Cattanach, Rodrigo Perez and Joven Nelson won the 4 X 100 in 44.80 seconds. The Cub team easily beat North Polk’s runner-up time of :46.09.


Om’Unique Wilkerson, Sam Abraham, Luke Merfeld and Jakob Strottman brought home the gold in the shuttle hurdle with a 1:02.60 showing. The Cubs did just enough to beat Gilbert’s runner-up time of 1:02.79.


Merfeld, Abraham, Ayden Rhodes and Noah Nusbaum completed the distance medley in 4:00.14 for silver. Adel-Desoto-Minburn took first in 3:47.59.


Individually, Wilkerson won the high jump, Nelson the 200 and Malachi Hornbuckle the 3,200. Hornbuckle also came in second in the 1,600, Nelson was runner-up in the 400, Sellberg took the silver in the 100 and Luke Merfeld turned in the second-best throw in the discus.


Wilkerson cleared six feet, 3.5 inches to easily top the 5-10 effort by Gilbert’s Eric Swart for first in the high jump. Nelson ran the 200 in :23.06 to beat out the :23.36 showing by North Polk’s J.D. Elefson and Hornbuckle completed the 3,200 in 10:08.26 to just hold off Gilbert’s Nathan Patel, who ran a 10:09.76.


Hornbuckle finished the 1,600 in 4:45.43 to come in just behind the 4:41.74 effort by Gilbert’s Tyler Rees and Nelson’s 400 time of :51.66 was just off the victorious :51.26 showing by Gilbert’s Will Greder. Sellberg ran the 100 in :11.59 to just miss the gold after Elefson finished in :11.56 and Merfeld’s top throw in the discus of 122-1.75 only trailed the 145-9 by Roland-Story’s Zach Shadlow.


Luke Fevold won a bronze in the shot put for Nevada with a toss of 45-11. North Polk’s Caleb Lomica threw a winning distance of 48-4 and Roland-Story’s Nathan Bell came in second with a throw of 46-5.


The Cub 4 X 800 team of Carter Franzen, Jacob Sanders, Dean Check and Noah Nusbaum placed third in 9:02.56. Gilbert ran an 8:18.62 to win the gold and Grinnell picked up the silver in 8:33.50.


In the girls’ competition, Nevada came in fifth with 88 points. Pella dominated the girls’ meet with 182.5 points, Gilbert tallied 109 points for second place and Ames and Norwalk tied for third with 98 points apiece.


Addi Vorm won two silver medals and Kacie Rewerts picked up one silver and one bronze individually for the Nevada girls.


Vorm was second in both the shot and discus, and Rewerts was runner-up in the 3,000 and third in the 1,500.


Vorm’s best throw in the shot of 32-4.5 only trailed the 37-10 effort by Pella’s Kaeleigh DeWaard.


In the discus, Vorm peaked at 95-9.75 to come in behind the 110-3 throw by Pella’s Elly Cairney.


Rewerts completed the 3,000 in 11:14.38 to come in just behind the winning 11:11.30 time by Gilbert’s Maggie Pollard. In the 1,500, Rewerts clocked in at 5:14.37 to finish behind the 5:04.28 by Knoxville’s Katie Keitges and Pollard’s 5:12.71 showing.


Caitlyn Sharp and Avery Mather each added an individual bronze medal for the Cub girls. Like the boys, the Nevada girls also placed third in the 4 X 800.


Sharp finished the 200 in :28.73 to finish behind only the :27.55 and :27.61 times run by the Ames duo of Bianca Sorrentino and Brooke Spraggins. Mathers finished the 400 hurdles in 1:20.59 to place behind the Pella tandem of Emily Holterhaus (1:11.65) and Elise Thoreson (1:13.67).


Gabby Sampson, Ryanne Barker, Grace Heiden and Eliana Hornbuckle finished the girls’ 4 X 800 in 11:31.09. Pella and Norwalk were neck and neck in the top two spots with respective times of 10:25.26 and 10:25.33.
